Looks like 2nd time was the charm for my lovely little doe Babette! Even though she kindled on the wire, she has been an excellent mama since then. (She even pulled more fur when the temps got colder last night!)

BUT, no sooner had I begun rejoicing that my Creme d'Argent breeding program is finally underway after much trial and error, I woke up yesterday morning to a snotty mama rabbit.

I moved her and her babies to quarantine. Whether it's just allergies or the big "P," I know I can't risk returning her to the rabbitry.

I just can't seem to catch a break with these Cremes.

Here's hoping for some nice replacement does in this litter. :clover: :clover: :clover:

Is it one nostril or both? Maybe she got a hay splinter up her nose and it's just an infection...far fetched, but when things look bad, you look for anything y'know? :(

Might be a good idea to minimize contact the kits have with the doe. Like, only have them near her for morning/evening feeding maybe.

I truly hope it's just allergies, but after going through Pasteurella with my FIRST brood doe a year ago, it makes me so nervous. :(

If it is Pasturella, the kits would have already been exposed. Most rabbits carry it in their nasal cavity though. If your rabbits have ever been exposed to a show or anything from a showroom, my bets are that your rabbits are carriers. I would be more worried about the active form of pasturella known as pasturellosis. That is what is dangerous because active forms will trigger reactions in the carriers and make them actual snotters.

Have you had rapid temp changes? This often causes temporary signs of illness. Only a few days without getting worse and then it's gone. I don't know if the stress on their system is letting dormant illnesses show or just causing a reaction by itself. Nearly all rabbitries have their own strains floating around that the rabbits have become resistant to so they don't show symptoms.

stress of pregnancy can bring out pasturella symptoms.

So it could be that.

OR it could be a reaction to something.

Either way I wouldn't be looking at keeping her UNLESS you find a foreign object lodged up her nose.

BUT her babies might be fine. I read a report somewhere about how the mom's milk can protect the kits against pasturella up to three weeks of age. Then you remove the doe (so get those kits started early on hay and oatmeal), clean the cage out really really well (or move the kits to a brand new cage) and support them with hay, oatmeal and pellets. (they should be just fine). Just keep the best two of the bunch. Keep them isolated (if you can just in case) and stress the heck out of them in a variety of ways and see if that makes them blow snot. Breed them earlier and watch. They just might pass with flying colours.

I know that I had success using this. No snot in my herd in a long time. :)

It's definitely both nostrils. Totally encrusted with yellow boogers and wet with snot.

This line of Cremes are from show stock, but I've never shown them myself.

I wasn't planning on her leaving quarantine alive, even if her symptoms disappear. It's just too risky. We'll see what happens with her kits!

Thanks for all the advice guys. :)

Oh no!!! :(
Terrible news. I hope you end up with some resistant kits!

So mama Creme has continued to have a snotty, boogery nose off and on, but I have never seen the trademark thick, white, oozing of Pasteurella. But there is obviously some type of upper respiratory infection going on that isn't going away.

Her litter is doing GREAT, though!! :D

They will be 4 weeks old in a couple of days, and I will try sexing them for the first time. Pray for lots of does!! :hex:

Beautiful bunnies!
But bad news for mama :( here's hoping for lots of adorable does!

BTW~ your nextbox... did you buy or build? It is really awesome!

That is a Sani-Nest. I actually got it secondhand, but modified one end so it wasn't such a high jump for mama bun.

-- Sat May 30, 2015 11:30 am --

**Update**

The kits are nearly 5 weeks old, so I went ahead and culled mama Creme this morning. Sad moment.

But, her meat is in the crockpot and her pelt is in the freezer, so not a total loss.

I also culled my first snotter from the litter last night. :( A doe, of course.

We'll see how the rest of the litter fares!

How did her lungs look? I'm thinking maybe resperatory infection? Sorry that you had to cull..it sucks when you had other plans... :(

The lungs really didn't look all that bad. But she has been blowing pale green snot and crusty boogers for a month how, and one of the kits was doing the same. Definitely something upper respiratory and contagious, whether or not it's the big "P."

Yep. Sucks. :(
