I have been watching the little chocolate and had noticed what seemed to be bedding stuck to his/her tummy, it was really stuck though... it was really hard and obviousely worked into the fur. I very slowly worked the hard thing out of the fur and it came out... but it appears that the umbilical cord area didn't heal right. This one had a little different looking belly button but I never really thought much of it... the other two are fine. It is a small open wound, does not appear to actually open up into the stomach cavity. Right now, I have antibiotic ointment and gauze on it, but I am worried about it getting infected.. Everything else about this bunny seems healthy, it is a fat little thing and crawls around fine... I just don't want it to get infected or anything...

Not really sure what is happening with the kit, but the only thing I can think of is that it might be an umbilical hernia. You might want to google unbilical hernia rabbits and see if that is what you dealing with.

I looked it up and that doesn't seem to be it... I am just wondering if this baby got bit or scratched... it is a pretty small hole, and seems to be superficial... And it just looks like it got stuff stuck to it(amazing how fast though... I check them every day) I will post a pic in just a couple minutes....

The first pic was two days ago and you can see the 'stuff'(it is bedding mixed with what I now assume is stuff from his/her wound) on his stomach...

This pic is of today, after I cleaned off the 'stuff' and put antibiotic ointment on(that is why the fur is wet)....

So..... any ideas? Should I keep them separated except for feeding, and keep them on cloth, or something other than hay and bedding until it heals?

__________ Mon Aug 29, 2011 2:15 pm __________

Sorry for the pic quality...

Looks to me like he just got stuff stuck to the healing umbilical stump like a scab. I would say keep it clean and keep putting on the ointment till it heals.

I second that--If it makes you feel any better, newspaper is much more sanitary than other bedding materials-- the heat printing actually 'sterilizes' it.

I would say don't worry, leave it, too. It is a scratch, in the scheme of things and will heal fine on its own. Looks very superficial.
