Ugly Liver - Graphic pictures

Busy day yesterday around our place. We processed 5 of our hair sheep for the freezer and 10 rabbits while we had two of rabbit does kindle. All of the rabbits were in 13-14 week range and were either NZ or NZ Cali crosses. One of the crosses had an enormous liver with a ton of white spots. The rabbit looked like all the rest with no sign's of illness, runny tummy or otherwise. It weighed 5.75 pounds and the processed carcass also looked fine and there was some build up of fat similar to the others that we processed. I've attached a series of pictures for comments. We did have a coccidia issue a few weeks back, however that was in our other grow out pen, in the grow out shelter that is seperate from our breeding does, jr bunnes and bucks.

Not sure about consuming this bunny and would also like to hear what the gang thinks. I've see one or two spots in other rabbits before, but nothing like this one.

That's what I figured as well. I suspect that at some point during handling we contaminated there growout pen a few weeks back. We pulled the pen from the shelter after discovering the liver and will be bleaching and torching it today.

We got a new batch of 5 week olds that are destined for the pen and need to obviously get things right. We pitched the carcass. Just could not get my head around putting it in the freezer.

The cocci all started with a few new rabbits that I failed to properly quaranteen...Lesson learned the hardway.

easily treated and managed.

can kill your young stock though.

Use the right med to get the job done though.

Yep, coccidia...just toss the liver. Corid or Albon to treat...

Bleach won't kill the unhatched oocysts...you need to use ammonia to clean the pen. BUT, DO NOT mix bleach and ammonia, it causes phosgene gas, which can kill you if you breath enough of it.

I've read that for the ammonia it should be mixed with water at 10% ammonia 90% water. Does that sound right?

For the Doris powder I've used 3/4 teaspoon per gal of water for treatment and 1/3 for prevention. Does sound sound correct as well?
