I am fascinated by the Velveteen's. And I have been think about getting another Elop to breed with my Elop doe, but the more I think about it, wouldn't it be fun to get a mini rex buck and do a little experimenting?? My son has the AFL's to show, so he wouldn't be missing out while we tried this out. I think it might be fun. What do you guys think? I realize we have to have 3 gens of velvets to count for anything. I have a copy of the COD.....

:hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

There's a breed called Velveteen? Or is that just another name for Rex? If it's a breed, oh dear, rabbitosis setting in! That was one of my favorite stories as a kid - forget Pinnochio, I wanted the plushies to become real!

Yes, Velveteen Lops. They are GORGEOUS! They aren't recognized yet, but I'm sure it will happen at some point.

Here are some photos

I believe she is referring to the Velveteen Lop. There are couple of people working on the COD's right now. I would think the first showing would be this year in Wichita. The solid would be first, then after it gets approval then the broken would be sure to follow.

Isn't a elop over 5 lbs? Seems like you would need a standard, not a mini. One of my breeders rexes went to a chocolate velveteen program.

My thoughts exactly. Plus Standard Rex have longer ears than minis, and no dwarf gene to contend with.

That's what I thought, but the COD has Seniors at 5-6 1/2 lbs. And all the info I have found so far seem to have them starting with Elop and Mini rex :?

That is surprising! I was envisioning a big bunny! I guess they are trying to get the long ears on a smaller "house bunny" size.

Well, I say go for it! They will be adorable. :) You wont get any Rex fur until generation two.

Looking at the pics again, I notice the two last ones have much shorter ears than the top two.

I have been speaking with the COD holder for the velveteen lops. They are indeed a cross between a mini rex and and english lop. Tho smaller in size, the ear length is long. Since the standard states that ears must balance with the head and body, it will never be as long as the e-lops.

The first person holding the COD failed to pass them on her 3rd showing last year. The COD was them passed to the person I have been in contact with. Her first showing is in 2014. Barring no failures, the velveteen will become an accepted and recognized breed in 2017.

Under the working standard, the velveteen can be shown and can win classes. It can win everything up to best in show, which it cannot win. No matter what the win tho, no legs will be issued to velveteens until the breed is accepted.

I believe the cross between an english and a full size lop is called a plush lop. Unfortunately, I don't have any COD or contact information for whoever holds it.

The person I have been in contact with does have a few velveteens for sale. They are not expensive. If you are going to nationals, it might be worth your time to get something from her, rather than spend years trying to get a breed already fairly well established. If you would like her contact info, just e-mail me.

Vlops are in the same catagory of what the Lion heads are going through. Wishing them luck on getting recognized. Don't give up. And I think luvabunny has an excellent suggestion on getting a bunny from someone who has already established. Nothing wrong in that.

I meant to say the cross between an elop and a full size REX is called a plush lop.....I think....

Faith..the COD holder is in Ohio, so not too far from you.

There is a breeder here asking $125 for his velveteens! They are nice people but no one is really interested when the price is so high for something unrecognized. They were selling Elops for about $150-200 and saying they were out of champion lines but not saying who they were from....I think they still need to learn the concept that not every litter mate is the same quality. Needless to say, nobody bought anything that day from them that day. I think the vlops are cute though! The o nes put here need work. They look like they have an uneven coat. This nc breeder brought some beautiful black ones to a show. Very sweet!

My sister is working on those but the breeder she got the male from would not sell her a female.

That bites, you would think he would want to spread the love!

Rex coat is a hard thing to get right, it's not just putting two rabbits together to get rex fur. It takes a while to work out the kinks, to get even fur texture and color, which doesn't even happen in Rexes all of the time.

I thought Vlops were in better shape than lionheads as far as COD.

I would love a velveteen! My two favorite breeds combined :)
I'm going to have to look into finding a breeder who would ship.

A couple of months ago, I would have had to agree with you. But since then, ARBA has made strides to accept the skirt length on the DM's. Singles are not holding their mane at Senior. DM's are too "fuzzy" at Jr, but hold beautiful manes at Sr. So the COD's are working with ARBA and they got some guideline and changes on the skirts for Jr.s So far, it looks good for Lion heads being accepted. WHOO HOO. Finally there is really good communication with both Lion head breeders and ARBA.

Hooray for Lionheads! :)

I think you all are right about just holding off. Vlops are already pretty well established. Maybe when I have more room. I just love my Elop and I am always looking for any excuse to breed her. LOL!

MSD has me looking at standard Rexes now! Darn this rabbitosis! :bunnyhop: :bunnyhop: :bunnyhop: :bunnyhop: :bunnyhop:
