This is my first litter of Satin Angoras :D They are just two days old, so maybe it'll be hard to tell.

I bought a beautiful REW Satin Angora doe with a REW dam, Chestnut and Black grandparents and Chestnut, Red, Chocolate and Black GGparents.

Sire is a Lilac Satin Angora. I assume aa bb C_ dd Ee, because I see non-extension. No clue if he could be Self Chin, though... Pretty sure there's Copper in these lines, too...

These colors seem different than what my FA have given, so I don't know if that's because Satin will have a different depth of color or what. :?

There are 8 kits. 5 look Agouti, with pink ears and belly. One of those looks Fawn or Red. The last 3 have darker ears and belly, but the coat, so far is not what I'd expect for a Tort or a Solid Self. I see Chocolate, but not sure if see any dilute.

Here's the whole litter. The chalky ones are all dark-eared, and the bright reddish-brown ones are pink-eared, and obviously, the lightest one is non-extension.

Here are the dark-eared kits. Look at the red hairs.

Then, there are the Agoutis.

What would you say these colors are? Maybe some Chocolate Chestnut, Fawn and ???

Thanks!!!!

I would call them adorable :D

I think a lot of satin colors are high rufus, and it wouldn't seem unlikely for satin angoras to share that tendency. I think I remember seeing a lot of really reddish looking ones...(shows you how much I know...lol)
Perhaps the rufus is throwing you off?

I think you are right. Could those chalky dark ones be Lilac? I've never seen a Lilac Satin Angora. Yes, high rufus is confusing me for sure.

gulp

Well, if they are, I'll learn to love 'em. I love this doe. And, I suppose there's nothing wrong with keeping those that look non-Steel and going from there...

__________ Wed Apr 15, 2015 4:29 pm __________

I'd love to see them again in a few days. ;) Lets hope they aren't steels

Now you've got me curious... How does Steel affect rufus?

I agree that they all look chocolate but that may change with more fur

If they have any black anywhere they are blacks as genetically a chocolate based rabbit cannot produce black pigment

Chestnut and chinchilla kits look black at birth because only the tips of the fur has grown in, later on the second band of Pearl develops and then the smokey base colour, I dont know why it would be different in agouti based satins and/or angoras

I am feeling like I cannot tell if the dull dark color is Black or Blue (and high rufus) based Chestnut, since Chestnuts don't really look Black (to me, anyway) when they are tiny.

What are your thoughts on the dark-eared kits, Dood. They're really the one's that confuse me. I truly have not seen anything like it in the French Angora, so something is different... I wondered if it was just the difference in the colors of the breeds.

They do look chocolate to me too, but I have only had two chocolates in the FA litter, and I don't really remember what they looked like, I think a bit purplish. My chocolate agoutis always look a bit purplish

I think the solid eared one with weird shadowing may be steel, the others I cannot tell but could be self or steel as the gene is very tricky

I have never had a high rufus chocolate steel (I try to keep my SF-mutt line as low rufus as possible)...so...

I can only guess.

Rufus doesn't show up on black, so I'd think a high rufus black based steel would only show the reddish color in the ticking.

But a high rufus chocolate based rabbit shows it, right?

Yes, I'm glad you said it. That IS weird shadowing. :? I'm trying so hard to not be jumpy in my Steel-suspicions, but... Yeah. It sure is different.

So... could a high rufus Chocolate Chestnut Steel look like this? And the others (with pink ears) are the normal Chocolate Chestnuts?

Are Steels attracted to me? :groooan:

OK, I'll take more pictures in a week. These really look like Chestnut to me, but would have to be Steel in that case. If the rufus can be changed by the Steel gene, then this could be likely. I don't know much about the buck.... any chance of Sable acting this way?

__________ Sat Apr 18, 2015 5:30 pm __________

I'm really starting to think this is all just an illusion from the sheen. I'm guessing they really are Chocolate Self kits with high rufus and crazy sheen... (is there a crossing your fingers smiley?)
