I've been thinking about a small breed for a while and, while Polish are high on the list, tri colour MR are buzzing around my brain too. Now MR in general aren't my usual cup of tea but tris in a Rex coat are very intriguing.

Sooo.... How close, if at all, are MR temperaments to Rex? I've heard that they aren't efficient as far as feed goes, do they really eat a ton? How do the tris stand up on the show table? Or do they? A variety that needs work is interesting as well.

I think Mini Rex can be very sweet....just depends who they come from, although the really competitive ones are from big rabbitries of 100-300. In my experience, they eat a lot. It seems most of their nutrition goes to their nails LOL. I get the culls of a very nice Mini Rex breeder over here and they eat a good bit when I'm feeding them an extra two weeks or so.

I've seen some breeders dab on tris but you need to start off with nices ones to compete well. Dare to Tri rabbitry has some super nice tri colors.

I'm not horribly worried about being super competitive since I live BFN and getting to the States for shows is kind of problematic right now. Of course, if I get the right stock.....I can be at least a little competitive up here.

That's a good thing to know, Ladysown.

Tri is a hard color, especially in Rex and Mini Rex. They aren't widely bred, mostly because they usually have to be kept as a separate variety from the rest of the herd, because of the harlie and non extesion genes does weird things to the other colors. I've only seen one or two in either breed, and I tried with MR for a while, if you remember, I had the booted Castor with Castor/Tri parents. Type is constantly being worked on, like rare colors, it falls to the wayside of getting that color. Just choose carefully.
I would love to get into Tri Rex, but I already three color projects that can't be bred with each other (chins, cals and sables).

That would be why I'd do the tri MR, I don't have enough space to try having tons of Rex colours.
The tris would be my only colour in the breed so I can concentrate on a 'complete', balanced rabbit.

Ladysown, those are some nice MR. Hmm, Ontario is definitely closer than Texas.
