This is awesome, I was just about to post up a thread asking what people had in their medicine chest, as I am just starting out my medicine chest is scant to say the least
just a couple quick questions

What kind of Penicillin and what dosage/weight ratio are you using?
I'm assuming the dextrose is a concentrate to be diluted with saline, also what dosage/weight?
What is the clove oil being used as?

Thanks

Now... as for having them together in a kit... well, that's another story.

I obviously have some work to do.

Injectable penicillin and the tetracycline products ar available at feed stires/farm supply stores. Dose the pen as if dosing a cat, the tetracycline products as if dosing poultry.
terramyscin is usually the eye ointment available for animals at pet stores and farm supply stores.

I have prescribed eye drops-- an antibiotic-- tobramycin--now, get this-- rabbit specialist prescribed for "Kady", Connors vet also prescribed for him, and MY opthamologist prescribed for me----

Clove oil is a topical pain killer- an old fashioned remedy for tooth pain, some people have used it to numb up ears before applying a tattoo clamp'

Injectable dextrose-- farm supply store== as well as large bottles of spray iodine. This stuff is inexpensive, and can help rehydrate and nourish a failing animal until you can either a- get it to a vet- or b- figure out what really can be done for the rabbit

people question dental floss-- but really, if needed, say a rabbit does not tri the umbiicus cleanly-- use it to tie the umbilicus off--Most dentl flosses are 'sterile' untill you remove it from packaging and get your dirty little fingers all over it.-- but do not use waxed or flavored varieties..

Popsicle sticks are used to immobilize those small legs should you suspect a bone injury. They can also be used to pry open a reluctant mouth.

Now, there are other things I need to add to what I have-- such as chemical heat and cold packs, I also need to find my 'snuggle safe'

Make a dosage chart out BEFORE your animals get sick!! trying to 'do the math' while one is stressed is not conducive to clear thinking.I page- one drug- break things down into easily managed weight differences-- say 4 ounce increments ( that is why the scale is included to get accurate weights on the sick buns)

Now, I am going to tell you something that really had me thinking about being prepared with such a kit on hand--

When I entered my Basenji in her first field trial, I already knew she had allergy issues to something 'unknown' my vet had suggested, and I complied, keeping a bottle of epi on hand--
well, at the trial, a whippet got stung by a bee or hornet-- and went into anaphylaxis. The dog's owner was a vet!!! The owner had no supplies on hand!!! the trial vet was a good half hour away. My car was just 50 feet away from the start point-- I was able to pull out the epi, a dosage chart, and a syringe for the vet/owner to dose her own dog. The dog lived, And a very embarrassed vet said thankyou--I understand she started packing a well stocked bag to trials after that--
There is no law that prevents a person from vetting their own animals-- In an emergency, farmers have performed c-sections on cattle, sheep and goats. Hunters have stitched up dogs and sometimes each other(a friend uses fly tying silk and very small upholstery needles) Things crop up-- and having a farm first aid kit is a necessity-- everything in the kit can be sued for just about any species..

mine's pretty mediocre, but i keep
syringes (different size, for injecting and feeding)
needles (22 gauge is all i use, even with Penicillin)
Penicillin G Procaine (got it from TSC)
saline wound spray
sterile pads
neosporin/bacitracin
gauze
scissors
bandage (a lot like vet wrap, the kinda stuff you wrap around a sprained ankle)
mineral oil
a scale
rubbing alcohol
assorted bandaids (yes, i have actually used them on rabbits)
lots of towels
echinacea capsuls

soon to be added:
a stethoscope
a razor for shaving areas of the rabbit
a rectal thermometer

and for dosage charts, the best place i've found is http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rx/drugcalc.html

Thank you very much, just put in an order to KVsupply for the procaine-g, dextrose, and syringes (1cc and 3cc)

they had free shipping and the only places to have those things locally here are going to be about 3 times the price

__________ Tue Mar 13, 2012 2:20 pm __________

that's a neat website, just to be 100% sure, you divide the bottle units (300,000 for procaine-g) with the mean recommended dose right? (a 4.1kg rabb gets a MRD of 164,000, divided by 300,000 units would be .55cc's)

i agree annclaire. i'll be coming back to this one. i'd love to have a few more people's input though, just to get more ideas. i'll be putting together a rabbitry medikit soon

lostcreekrabbits: yes, i believe that is correct.

Just to let y'all know, a sticky will be forthcoming. It will be compiled from this thread, just to kind-of bring the information together. I am sure that any additional information and elaboration added to this thread will be helpful. :)

With the dogs, I have quite a few items here. I like the Tylan, and I have a huge bottle of Ivermec, have not used it on the buns yet.

I also have a surgical stapler, bought it when Phoenix sliced open her face. Don't know how I would ever use it with the buns, but it's handy anyway.

To make things a bit simpler-- ON the Bottle, put a label, that tells you how many units of medication are in one CC. This way, you have half of your math done when you need to give an injection. Do this with EVERY bottle of medication-- because not all brands are equal!!

Don't know if you would have a use for it with the buns, but super glue works to close wounds. :)

I have plenty of that too :)

the surgeons all use staples when they close up the surgical sites on rabbits--say it s more secure than stitches-- (yeah right-- they just wanna charge for the staple removal!) for the mosr part, unless the wound goes INTO the muscle tissue, Nature ahs a way to keep things going along without closing the skin. If that real thin layer of tissue is still covering the muscle, not broken, Nature intended for the skin to close up itself- as that thin tissue is a 'backup' to the skin. Rabbits have lost tails to cats-- only to grow a 'new one" ( the tail gets skinned, and the skin and fur grow back!!!)
