So upon inspecting one of our does today ( she has 4 week old kits) my husband felt a lump. On closer inspection we found that one of her teet (nipples) is bitten off! red sore and maybe mastitis too... We started antibiotics.. pain meds and acidopholis under vet supervision. But has anyone heard of this before???? we are concerned if we breed her again she will continually get mastitis due to no way to express the gland. Love to hear anything about this topic.. Sad if we cant breed her she is an awesome doe!!!! :(

Oh, that sounds painful!

I've never heard of a doe having a nipple bitten off. Rats can bite off toes through the floor wire, and chickens can apparently jump and bite off toes. Maybe the nipple got bitten off that way?

I do not know whether to expect mastitis from now on... I think others have had a doe with a nipple that's become non-functional, and they continue to do okay after that.

Hopefully, you get some better answers.

I don't know about rabbits but my Tamworth sow has a couple nipples that are damaged ( she has 16, so not a big deal) and has not developed mastitis in them.

They all swell with milk after she gives birth but since the piglets don't use the damaged ones the milk is re-absorbed and they shrivel up. It looks quite funny as she will have a whole row of full teats except for one in the middle, kind of like she is missing a tooth.

It must happen in the wild and they manage to cope with it. If it was my doe i would breed her and see what happens in the next litter.

I wonder if the nipple is still there but hidden by the swelling? :?

In addition to the treatment you are already using, be sure to disinfect the cage floor.

When my doe Avalon had the beginning stages of mastitis, I gave her mint and catnip, both of which decrease milk production. It was very effective, and I only needed to do so for a couple of days and the problem resolved without total loss of milk.
