What are tan rabbits used for? Can they be used for meat? I think they are just beautiful, but I don't want rabbits that are only good for pets or show.

You can eat any rabbit.

However, Tan's are small and have a racier body type and I would not recommend them for meat.

If you like the colour then that can be achieved by breeding in the tan and wideband gene to a meatier black rabbit like the New Zealand. You would may loose a bit of the rich red Rufus factors but you can work to breed theses in.

Would I want to breed a black tan rabbit (atatB_C_D_E_ww +rufus) to a red New Zealand (A_B_C_D_eeww +rufus)? Don't red New Zealands already have the ww genes and the rufus? I'm not sure if this is true or not (I'm new to genetics!) I just read that somewhere. Then I can get the AatB_C_D_Eeww +rufus?

Then you would breed two of those (AatB_C_D_Eeww +rufus) and hopefully get a 50% tan and new zealand rabbit with the genotype atatB_C_D_E_ww +rufus)?

Then work on making the rabbits meatier.

I'm probably completely wrong on all of this, including the genotypes, so correct me.

Your doing great!

And yes the NZReds 'should' have a lot of Rufus and be wideband but many are not. If you can find a high quality NZRed then by all means use him/her.

There is no way to know if the Tan has two tan genes or a tan and a self or if the red carries self. As your first litter will probably have mostly reds you will have to guess who got the tan gene.

Breeding to a black takes out the guess work as you will get tan markings in the first litter, you can pick the ones with the best colour and breed them together to get wideband and intensify the Rufus.

Would a black new zealand's genotype be aaB_C_D_E_?

So breeding the black new zealand to a tan I should be able to get at_B_C_D_E_ww +rufus?

Thanks so much for all the help!

Almost

A black NZ would be - aa B_ C_ D_ E_ W_ ( but probably WW)

In the first generation the tan coloured kits would be - ata B_ C_ D_ E_ Ww +rufus and there could be blacks in the litter if the Tan parent carried self.

Breeding a brother to a sister would give you a few - at_ B_ C_ D_ ww + rufus and there could be some blacks.

Will I be able to tell the difference between the tan colored kits with the genes Ww and ww? Will they look significantly different?

It is the wideband gene that makes reds look like selfs instead of agouti so the "ww" rabbits will have red/orange belly colour instead of white/cream.
