I'm beginning to get quite worried about my doe who is nursing 5 three week old kits. Tonight I realised just how skinny she is - her ribs are sharp and pointy, when running my hands down her back I feel the hollow behind her ribs and her hip bones jut out. She doesn't look unhealthy, her coat hides how thin she is, and her coat is still shiny, though a bit coarse.
I posted on a facebook page last week about advice on what to feed her to help her gain weight. As per suggestion, I've bought oats and linseed (flaxseed) and I'm giving her three tablespoons of oats a day and one teaspoon of the linseed, as advised. Do other people have different ratios to help her gain the weight? Or any other suggestions on what else I can be feeding her?
How long would it take before I begin to see weight come back onto her?
Should I wean the kits earlier than I usually would (6 weeks) to help her get her condition back up? They're eating her vegetables, grass, and nibbling her pellets. Also getting into her oats, the cheeky things.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

She should have free access to her feed at all times, both hay and pellets. If it seems she's having to push kits out of the way every time she eats (noticed that with my doe), you may want to bring her out for separate feedings one, or twice a day.

It's OK to wean the kits as early as 4 weeks if you are concerned for the health of the mother.

-- Mon May 25, 2015 10:25 am --

I also feed black oil sunflower seeds to enrich the milk supply of mature does.

I give a mix of oats, barley, BOSS, wild bird seed, flax, and a bit of Calf Manna (which may not be available there).

If a doe is still with her litter I will free feed the supplement, since the kits eat it as well.

Yes, she has pellets and hay there to eat all day. And I'm feeding her vegetables and grass in the morning and night. She isn't pushing the kits out of the way, that I've seen.
