I have a Standard Rex buck, japanese harlequin colour. Trying to decide what to breed him with. I was told Red or Chinchilla colours would be best. Definitely interested in the chin for the possibility of a magpie!

But what would the Red and JH make? I keep reading about genotypes, and I'm learning more and more, I get the gist of it but also getting really confused when it comes to breeding and what happens with the colours then.

I have an Opal doe as well, they are cousins, but I was told no way could I breed them. Is that just because they won't produce show colours or because the harli gene will be lost? Not planning on breeding for show so that doesn't bother me!

If you use the opal doe you will most likely get chestnuts.

Breeding red it all depends what's behind it. Red and harlequin most likely.

You can breed anything you want together as long as you're prepared to eat/pet out anything that's off color-wise. But type trumps colour if breeding for show.

Thanks so much! I googled chestnuts and yeah I can see why people have advised against breeding the opal with my buck. Not the prettiest colour!

The red came from a castor otter and solid lilac. Here's a picture of the litter.
