I am sooooo excited! After months of searching and countless hours talking to different breeders, I have finally found my mini rex buck. He is a black otter with 7 legs at a year and a half of age. I am hoping to also pick up a couple chocolate otter does from the same breeder and then possibly a lilac otter as well. I'm taking the kids on a two hour road trip Friday to pick up the buns. I have attached pics. What are you guys' opinions?

Hi, don't have mini rexes, but just love the look of your handsome rabbit. Just like the Marten, love the otter coloring. After joining this site, just love looking at the rexes sleek look. Very handsome.

Can't wait to see pics of the does you get! And future popples! Wishing you all the success in starting your Mini Rex program!

Looking at it in the first picture, it looks like his tail sets off to the side a little bit, I would make sure it just so happened to lay that way, and not actually be crooked. Ears tad on the long side, and it may just be the way he is sitting, but he has a bit of a narrow head for a buck. Mini Rex are supposed to have a nice blocky head

Sorry if I seem to picky, but mini rex are very competitive, and I want you to have a good start!

Thank you both for your honest opinions. :) Bayside isn't the only buck they have available so I'll take a good hard look at the others as well. I definitely want to be sure I start out with the very best I have access to. In fact, there's another black otter that is younger with 3 legs that I was looking closely at. I'll see if I can post pictures of the chocolate does here shortly.

__________ Tue Oct 23, 2012 9:45 am __________

We are new too, but I agree with comments above. I like the middle two in the second set of pictures, without having them poses it is hard to tell.....maybe others with more experience can give input! Best of luck!!!

I think they are all nice looking, granted i am still learning and just started showing. I would think if that buck has 7 legs, the judges must think he is pretty nice looking.

Me too, but all of the rabbits are posed differently so it is hard to say.

I am new to evaluating rabbits, so take my input with a grain of salt. Or better yet, the whole salt shaker!

Here is a link that may help you to evaluate them when you are there:

Silver Marten are one of my long time favorite breeds, even when I was a young 4-H'er. So any of the new otters and "tan" marked rabbits are my fav's.

Hi

Hard to really tell in pics but the first pic looks like a weaker shoulder, where that dip is at, not as much depth as I would like to see, (cant tell width from pic) maybe a little longer than I like too.
2nd set of pics: I like the first pic and 2nd pic, so if the 2nd pic is same buck it looks better in that pic. (ok I reread and see it's different buck, I like it better based on the pics.)
3rd/4th aren't really posed well so hard to see.
Even if a rabbit has legs it may just be it was the best of some really poor options :) so without seeing what the competition looked like it's hard to say.
When colors are newer it's harder to have nice ones so judges have little to pick through, so it's best to know what your looking for ask a lot of questions and feel a lot of rabbits. Hope that makes sense.
Good luck at convention and the bunny addiction!! :)

You should look at Brad's stock from Noble Furs. He's from over here and I know he is heading over to convention. He hasn't left yet but he might be able to bring or is briing something to sell. His stock is gorgeous. Even some of the culls he gives me are have great potential ,but he practices harsh culling even with his herd of around 200. I love his culls cause they are so beefy for little rabbits :D

__________ Wed Oct 24, 2012 8:23 am __________

I do like the second buck with the 3 legs vs the one with 7. Might be the way he is posed but he looks rather long in that shoulder. I also love that litter mate!

Absolutely love the doe in the first pics in your second set. It's hard to tell with any of the others because theyre not posed really well. The otter doe in the second set of pics looks really nice as well. Don't get your rabbit based on whether or not he has legs or not. I've seen some really crappy rabbits granded that have 13 legs and some awesome rabbits that don't have any legs. It's all in the judge and the competition

__________ Wed Oct 24, 2012 4:29 pm __________

Just looked and saw the pic I was reffering to was the other buck. lol.

Thanks everyone! I have decided on Red Hot (the other buck). I am going to pick him up tomorrow, along with one of the chocolate otter does, a black otter doe, and a lilac otter doe. I will also be entering all of the new rabbits in an upcoming show in November and then breeding Red Hot to the lilac and black after said show. I really appreciate all of your opinions and look forward to expanding my rabbitry to show rabbits as well as meat rabbits. Thank you all bunches!
