Hello everybunny. I really feel like bombing this forum about NZs.... Anyway, coud someone please pop me a link to some sort of a link with standards for New Zealand (Red). Also, whout would be NZR ideal genotype and phenotype (like shade and lenght of fur, underbelly,...). Thanks in advance. -Marko

The Red variety, in the US, is to be a brilliant reddish sorrel colour, not becoming so dark that it resembles a mahogany red colouration. The colour is to be carried as deep down the hair shaft as possible and the belly colour is to be similar if not the same shade of red as the top colour. White colouration on the underside of the tail or on the front or rear food pads is permissible. Eyes of the New Zealand Red are to be brown in colour.

Don't know if that will help you any, I'll see if I can find an exact ideal pheno and geno type

The ARBA SOP is a copyrighted book, so you may not find exact standards on a page. Check the NZ national club, if not, I'm sure one of here can use our SOP to paraphrase for you.

For what country? The US standard is different from most of the European standard. US calls for a commercial body type which means the taper of the body starts at the front of the shoulders/back of the neck. Across the pond they use more of a mandolin shape where the taper starts at the back of the shoulders. Many meat stock rabbits are like that too instead of to show standard. I'm not sure what color differences there might be. I found limited details online. Not sure what it would cost for you to order a book of standards from wherever you are trying to match type and color.

That's what I am mosty confused about. Seems that in Europe we have Red New Zealands as sepparate breed as opposed to New Zealands that come in Red, Black, White and, somewhere, Blue. The RNZ breed resemble Czech Red, but are larger, and New Zealand in Red are what you have in US known as NZR. Confusing, right? It get's better. In Croatia, both New Zealand Red and Red New Zealand are categorised under same name, but are breed in separated lines. Where is this world going?

This is very confusing, I haven't been able to figure it out myself but I always list them as New Zealand Reds, as if they were a separate breed even though genetically they really are not, I don't think. I think the fact that you can breed a NZ Red to a NZ of any other colour and it's still a purebred NZ classifies it as the same breed. Let me do some digging into genetics.

In Europe they often class agouti and self versions of the same breed as separate because if you cross them you get a bunch of unshowable colours like chestnut (black agouti), opal (blue agouti), steels, torts etc...

ARBA separates the Creme and Champagne D'Argent because they were already separate breeds in Europe when they were imported.

In the US they are not.

I'm not up on my NZ history, but perhaps if another breed was brought in to create/revive the color in Europe, then that may be why they are considered a different breed?

__________ Wed Apr 23, 2014 6:45 am __________

I figured the rules were more strict there. Things tend to be loose and fast in the US, and "pure" is a loose translation...

Cool. Thanks!

I'm most interested in NZRs and the very elusive (in my area) Blue NZ.
I know blues aren't ARBA or anything but I'm looking to add them in as a pet line.
actually I find both reds and blues elusive around here.
