We just noticed today that our 5 month old Netherland buck, Russia, has completely bald feet. His nails were not overgrown. He's on a wire floor, but so are all my other bunnies and they're all fine. Would it be sore hocks? We put a box in for him to be able to get off the wire when we realized this. What else should I do for him? :bunnyhop:

I have 2 rabbits with bald areas on their feet, but they were also the ones that had the "mites" or "dampness" issue on their bum and thighs. So makes me wonder what it really is. Since they all have dense fur on their feet and on grass.

The 3 new rabbits I got had raw hocks, no hair and the black rabbit left a trail of blood everywhere it hopped.

With my new rabbits I believe it was from cage dampness and too long toe nails. Since the nails have been cut past the quick by my equine vet and a few treatments of Neosporin the first couple days with me - their hocks have healed rather quickly in less than a week and the rabbits are getting around much much faster and with ease.

Good Luck with your rabbits.

Well, it looks very similar to the bunny in the picture from yesterday's thread, except his whole foot is bald on the bottom...even up by the toes! His forefeet are bald too. I don't think dampness would be an issue at all. He's not bleeding, but they look very red. What in the world would it be?

Your profile doesn't list your state- are you in a humid or an arid environment? My gut feeling on the wholesale hairloss is that it must be a fungal or bacterial infection.

I'm in Ohio. We're having a drought currently, so there hasn't been much moisture of any sort. What could I put on his feet if it is a fungal infection?

Blu-kote or Nu-Stock would be my choices. The Blu-kote is available as a spray, so if the hocks are very painful I would choose that simply because I wouldn't cause more discomfort by touching the skin. It is messy though and will stain you purple for a couple of days.

Nu-Stock is very effective and would be soothing. It contains Sulfur, so the rabbit is not likely to try to lick it off as it tastes and smells nasty.

If those are not available, OTC products for Athlete's Feet will work as well.

He really doesn't seem to be that sore...yet. I'm afraid he'll end up raw though if we don't remedy this soon. Where could I buy Blu-kote?

__________ Wed Sep 19, 2012 4:34 pm __________

Never mind...just called my local feed store and they carry it! I think it's worth a try...his feet look terrible! Poor little guy...

My mini Rex doe came up with balding spots when her kits were about two weeks old and has never been on wire. I mixed a couple drops of tea tree oil in with a cup of water into a sprayer and sprayed the spots every other day for two weeks and it cleared up. Was certainly odd but healed very nicely;)

Is there any way the paws/claws, could be hurting him? Can you take pictures of the treatment progress?
Check the length of the claws, do they need to be clipped? The claws may hurt so much, that the rabbit is sitting on it's hocks.

Well, after just 2 applications of Blu-Kote (a week apart) Russia's feet are almost totally furred back up! :)That stuff is amazing. I'm trying it out on our goldendoodle who has a cyst of some sort on his side that keeps opening up. I'm hoping it'll work for him and save us a surgery bill! Unfortunately my phone won't let me take any pics right now or I would post some of Russia's purple feet. LOL

Your nethie may have actually been chewing his own fur!! Perhaps the blue-Kote stopped him from further chewing. We had a doe once that was very busy and out of boredom ate all the fur off her legs and feet! All we did was give her a couple toys and she was so happy with them she stopped the chewing. Everytime someone would go into the room she would pick up her toy and go around the pen "showing" it off!
