Ok, so for a while I've noticed my Holland doe shaking her head quite a bit and itching her ear. I looked down both ears with a flashlight and could not see anything but a small dot in one ear that was shiny and yellow and just looked like a little bit of wax. I wouldn't be concerned, it's just that she's been irritated with it for a week or more. I just notice her shaking her head about once a day, so it isn't that major...just thought I'd ask. :) See if anyone had an opinion.

I have some Otibiotic ointment (brad VetUS Butler Schein) that I got for my buck a while ago because he had dried blood in his ear and a possible infection (from a dog bite, while I way and my friends were taking care of him. :x ) it worked well and everything was cleaned out in a week. :)
My mom said it just looked like wax, but I just thought I'd see what you guys recommended. :)

As far as I know the ear should be clean.
The wax could be buildup from ear mites.
You can put oil in the ear to smother them, repeat at 10 and 20 days to get any hatched eggs.
Mineral oil or vegetable oil... I think really any oil is fine.
Just syringe into the ear, massage, and stand back for the shaking head :)

Oil works wonders on ear mites (and yeah.... I have totally overdone it using a medicine syringe - she flinched and I plunged in way more than anticipated. whoops! she was oily for a while after that!). I have used just plain old olive oil. I did buy some mineral oil. Will be trying it tomorrow, actually.

In my experience multi-colored flaky pieces of junk (once it's bad enough to be visible which is what a doe I purchased had... she was my first rabbit and I had no idea what to look for  :x ).

Ear mites just look like ear wax, only it itches. You can't see them with the naked eye.
The itching is the give away.

Yep, if your bun has light colored ears and you shine a light in deep you can see what looks like yellowish dirt..sometimes flaky dirt. But the mite itself is only visible under a microscope...it is the itching and head shaking that is a tip off. Sometimes they will try to stick their foot in real deep and scratch slowly..Make sure you do the follow up treatments. Once those buggers are established they are super hard to get rid of.. :x
If you want to get grossed out look in the parasite section of the forum there is a picture of a cow ear mite...I get itchy just thinking about it...

For ear mites we mix oil and sulfur to kill those tiny *******s.

Like I said, only a tiny bit of wax I could see, and no bugs. What do ear mites look like?

You cannot see them.... I'm not sure you can see them
with the aid of a magnifying glass. A 9X jeweler's loop....Possibly.

The wax you're seeing may well be the "scab-residue" left behind by
the mites as they establish a stronger colony. They'll harvest the blood
and leave a crusty residue behind. If it's a new colony beginning, the
"wax" you're seeing may well be soft and pliable.

Everyone has their own methods for elimination. I like to treat ONCE
and be done with it. I don't dilly-dally around with it by treating once
now and then going back again in "X" number of days. I use an ear-mite
treatment that contains the organic compound of pyrethrum. It'll kill
mites stone cold dead with one treatment.

YES...........I get some oil outside the ear and it looks gross....LOL.
Oh well, it doesn't last forever and the mites will be history shortly
because of it. I'd rather have an oily-lookin' ear and be done with it.
It stresses them more, the more often you have to treat them.

Grumpy-
