One acre.....How's the new litter doing? Have you been taking the nest box inside? It has been hot here in Indiana (over 100) near my cages. I can't imagine what Texas is like. I lost 3 of 9 bunnies to the heat early last week while I was camping. The care giver only looked at, never handled, the bunnies so I found three little piles of "empty fur" when I returned. She didn't replace the ice bottles or count the exposed kits.

The breaker tripped in the barn the other night (it was 93 at 11 pm) and the fans quit. I lost 4, 2 week olds and thought another 2 weren't going to make it through the day but, they pulled through. I place an ice pack in the nest box now that it's hit 102, 104, 105 and 103.5 today. I also pulled a bunch of the fur from the nest box and everyone seems to be doing MUCH better with this sweltering heat now. I'll not be breeding for a july or August birthing again but, this is my first year with rabbits and I'm still learning. It's just to much of a risk and it's so hard to keep them comfortable.

__________ Sun Jul 01, 2012 6:20 pm __________

Hey Dan, try using 1 or 2 fewer fans. You may be overloading the circuits by running too many of them.

Also, try and keep your fans at floor level. Cooler air normally settles and circulating it up will lower your barn temperature by 5-10 degrees. May not sound like much, but it feels like much more than that.

I had forgotten to unplug the air compressor when I finished working and it was on the break with the fans. I only had 1 fan running at the time I was using the compressor but, I turned on the other fan and left. I guess the air leaked down and when it kicked on it pulled to many amps and tripped the breaker.

Yeah, that isn't good. There is always a limit on how much juice a breaker can deal with before it trips.

I usually turn the fans off at night to allow them to cool, and neglected to turn them back on during the morning watering today. I went out a few hours later and the temperature inside the barn was 100 degrees. I turned on the fans, and within 15 minutes, it was 93 degrees. They sit at floor level, and work so much better at circulation this year than they did last year, when I had them sitting above the cages. It's such a big difference.

I've found that rabbits tend to respond well to ice in water crocks in the middle of the day, as well. Once they figure out what it is, they'll be waiting on you when you get there!!
