should I attempt a new color?

So my american sables are throwing nonextension rabbits. I got some torts out of my creme d'argent and a few generations of breeding "purebreds" I just got my first sable point. A sable point is a sable right? So couldn't it become an approved american sable color? Should I play with this project? I'm thinking of ordering a cage stack off klubbertanz that I could use for it. Or is the work not worth it and should I just cull them like everyone else?

I have been thinking, when I've been a member of ARBA long enough, which Rex color I would like to work on. Since Sable is such a Rare color anyway, I have my hands full right now with Sable, Seal and Cal, but I think, I think I would like a Smoke Pearl or Sable Point as well.

If you have the time, maybe ask some American Sable people what they think and you could have a project on your hands.

Well akane you have my support, I really enjoy the pointed sables I have a pointed buck in my growout pen looking foreward to working with him

I'm hoping the sable point is a buck so I can use him to test which does got the e gene and make more. The litter is in colony so I'm not sure which doe he came out of. It's just my extra sable/seal meat colony that it popped up in. I just pulled the buck and was going to sell them all when this silvery kit not pure white like the pointed whites was found. I know the seal buck in the other colony carries e because he's throwing torts on my creme d'argent. I'm not sure if Syd, my really expensive sable buck, carries it. I might also ask the guy I got the e throwing rabbits from if he has any unrelated sable points he'd sell me instead of butchering.

Well, I can't stop you, but I must admit I love the traditional (siamese) sable. Then again, you're not forcing your sable points on me, are you? ;)

I'd say go for it if you wish. Mentally I'm just trying to sort out what a nonextension seal or Himalayan looks like. o_O Hmmm. I've heard of a nonextension ELop, kind of looked torted (more extensive points). I suppose a seal might just look like a sable? That could be confusing.

So thought I would post a couple pics
My pointed buck 4 months old

I have two seal does I plan on breeding him two so hoping for some nice sable
Here is a pic of his full brother

I plan on breeding him to the 2 sable does I have so hoping to get another pointed someday I'd love to get a pointed doe to breed to my seal buck
So I was wondering how the breed has worked out for meat production I've only been into sables for 3 months so have not butchered any yet but the breeders I got mine for said they had a good carcus so I was wondering what your thoughts were

__________ Mon Aug 12, 2013 8:29 pm __________

Well sorry for that second pic, but hey 1 out of 2 not bad for my first time

We started with 2 seal bucks and 1 pointed white doe from one breeder and 2 sable does from another. The pointed white failed miserably and died eventually. 1 of the sables produced a litter of 2 sables, 3 seals and died on her 2nd litter. The sables were both does and I kept the one with the most depth and haven't bred her yet. Then bought a proven sable show buck. The younger sable produced 2 litters of seals and sables in colony and I butchered all the seals at 12 weeks. They came out around 2-3lbs with organs. The sables are in a colony together and have started having litters by the show buck. These are all going to meat and the buck is bigger than the seal so hopefully the offspring are bigger. I pulled the buck so when they are done with their kits I can decide who to keep or sell.

Thaank you for the info akane, I haven't started breeding yet but will soon hopeing things go well.all of my stock came from two different breeders in iowa I've looked and looked but haven't found any breeders in mn, but since I'm only 30 miles from the border it hasn't been two bad of a drive. So I think I have a good idea about breeding colors pointed to seal, sable to sable, seal to sable but what if you breed pointed to pointed? We will have to stay in touch l would like to get a pointed doe someday I have a really good seal buck from a good show line, thanks again

Pointed to Pointed will just get you 100% pointed. Same with seal to seal. 1 has all himi genes and 1 has all sable genes so they can't throw anything else.
