Scattered white hairs on a black mini rex

I have a beautiful black minirex that did very well in shows until this Jan when he suddenly got a lot of scattered white hair in his adult coat and got a dq. There was nothing in his baby coat. Can this depend on the cold or bad quality pellets or is it genetic? Is it possible to use him in breeding? He comes from good lines and none of his parents has any white hair.

Did you ever figure out why the white hairs appeared? I just had one do the same thing.

I have a VM black ND who's all black bit with white admits and in think he's had a few white hairs, but definitely not that many

How old is the Rex and what color are his parents. Could he have the silvering gene?
