Saw the coolest looking rabbits on Youtube.

What would you call a rabbit that has broken black patches over a chinchilla grey body? They almost look like blue ticks! I saw them on a Youtube vid called "Judging of the rabbit meat pen". It's only 53 seconds long. Does anyone what combination of parents would cause or lead to a broken on color patterning? I would love to get some rabbits like that!

I believe those are Champagne d'Argent. They are born black and then gradually get their silvering... so they do end up looking patchy with black parts and silvered parts.

I have a litter of Champagnes right now...they're JET black, lol. However, today I noticed a few silver hairs on their faces...the silvering shall commence soon!!! Eventually they will be a fairly uniform silver color all over.

You're right. I looked up "patchy Champagne d'Argent" and images provided the proof. I wish such markings were permanent, but alas. I'm hoping to get a pair of meat rabbits and was thinking of tricolor rex x harlequin rex. Should prevent me from accidently buying close relations and the patterning should help me identify individuals in the litter....At least that's the plan, I've never done this before.

.......yeah but if you are raising for meat, every litter will look like that for a while before you butcher. So it'll be permanently-new!!!!

FYI, tris and harlis can pop up in the SAME LITTER, if one parent is broken-colored that is. So you could get a tri and a harli that are siblings- can't get more related than that!

Also.........you should WANT your rabbits to be related. Better consistency of quality that way.

Sorry to take so long to respond. My only computer access is at work and I've been sick. I didn't know that tri's & harli's were that close! Like I said, I've never done this so I've joined the forum to learn. Thanks for the info. I've been doing some studying but so far everything I know is all theory and no practise. But I'll move my thread to meat rabbits now, since that's my next round of questions. Thanks, everyone!
