Give yourself some time to get thru this. I am sure it's devistaing. I think you can still do what you set out to do, and may still want to down the road. Sounds like you had a great plan and just faced a huge speed bump. I would get a simple plan going for the short term and see how you feel in a couple months......but whatever you decide, it will be what's right for you and I hope you know you have a good support system here!

Sorry for delayed posting, I was sort of in avoidance mode for a day or two there with dealing with this and how I felt about this. I wish I could have pulled a miracle for her. I keep going back and wondering if I could have done more or if any of the things I tried made it worse. Like should I have injected the penG IM since that's faster? Should I have purchased fluids and administered it subQ? Should I not have given her the ice packs? (since her temp went from boiling hot to "normal" rather rapidly after the aspirin) Should I have done this, should I not of done that... but I did everything I could think to do at the time and honestly, I think it was just her time. As previously mentioned, she hid something to the point there was just no turning back anymore and in a way it is sort of a blessing not to have a trait like that bred into my herd. Most of my buns give SOME warning sign something is 'off'. She gave absolutely none until she was completely bottoming out and had - on her own - already given up.

I'm just sorry I couldn't make a miracle happen and save what was an extremely sweet rabbit while giving y'all a happier ending.

I'm also struggling to ignore my suspicious nature that the person who sold her to me was aware something might have been wrong. I acquired this rabbit 09/17/15, I have had her for less than 2 months and something like this occurs. I just can't help my uneasy feeling about that either. It also somehow makes me feel better... less my fault because it was a conspiracy. :insane:

Sali, I honestly do not think you did anything wrong or could have done anything more.

As far as I know, IM is not usually used in rabbits, but I could be wrong.
SQ fluids could have been done, but I don't think it would have made much difference.
Ice packs probably felt really good, but did not pull her fever down much. We've seen pictures of rabbits lounging on snow. That fur!

She tanked so fast, and then passed so fast, I don't think you could have turned her around.

I think that giving her aspirin and PenG probably helped her feel much better, so she was able to pass without much suffering. You were able to give her that.

Almost two months out, I think the seller probably did not know. Unless there was a known dental issue, but you should have noticed that on routine buyer's inspection.

You fought for her, and alleviated her pain and fever. You did everything you could. :grouphug:

I did not actually get to inspect the rabbit much at all upon purchase. She was in a transport cage and honestly, all I was able to check was how she looked behind bars (she was in a terrible molt that... she never got out of while in my care, he mentioned he'd been feeding her corn to try and get it to drop but to no avail, being as new as I am to showing I didn't think much of it but I did give her BOSS for it instead). I did not think to check her teeth after as she was placed right into quarantine for a full month. I figured if anything was off I'd just see something during that time (I was more looking at ear mites, sneezing, going off feed, and wet forelimbs). Then a week after Quarantine (to be sure she wasn't bred) I placed her outside with the rest of the rabbits. The first time I ever checked her teeth was when she was tanking and all signs were pointing to teeth. All I knew up until then was that her front teeth looked good and were properly aligned.

This was an older rabbit with 13 legs, he claimed his wife didn't like the head bobbing REW did so he was selling out on all of his NZW.

-- Sun Nov 01, 2015 2:47 pm --

I wound up doing the necropsy and it was NOT her teeth all along. I did not want to post the pics here so made a new thread. Once I get some input, I'm going to pack her up respectfully and freeze her so I can give her a proper burial at my new home after my move. I don't want to bury her here knowing I may be moving in a month. It feels... disrespectful.
