Can anyone tell me if rex fur is a simple recessive gene like satin fur is? Thanks

Thank you.

__________ Fri Sep 05, 2014 6:26 pm __________

Ok, so if it's recessive, is it on the same place as the satin fur? So for example, if those fur genes were on the same location, a satin rabbit would be sasa and a rex would be rr, but if they were both on a different locations a satin rabbit would technically be sasa RR(or Rr) and a rex would be rr SASA(or SAsa)? I'm trying to figure it out because I was commenting on how pretty the tri colors are and someone told me to breed a tri rex to a satin, then breed those normal furred rabbits back to a satin to get tri satins. Is that possible or does that mess everything up? I'm still not sure about color genotypes yet, now this! LOL

I have no clue about the loci positions for the coat genes but I do know that you can get satinized Rex coats when you cross them. Not in the first generation but they will pop up so be ready to cull for coat faults. You will get the ej gene into your herd with the tri Rex, again not in the first generation but once you start breeding the carriers together tri Satins will show up.

The 4 coat genes (rex, satin, maned/lionhead, angora/long) are all on separate locations so this is correct.
a satin rabbit would technically be sasa RR(or Rr) and a rex would be rr SASA(or SAsa)
and you could create a satin Rex lionheaded angora :)

The harli gene can mess up full extension and create harlequinized chestnuts/castors instead of just harlequins.

You should only use nonextension rabbits in a tri or harli breeding program to avoid the harli gene sneaking into other colours like black and other self colours

OK, that makes sense. That's why with the first cross you would only get normal furred rabbits.

That truly would be unique, wow, just thinking about it makes me laugh!

Hey I know!!! Talk MSD into breeding one of her Leonis Rex's to one of her satins, keep a kit and breed to one of PSFAngoras....Angoras

And...... VOILA!!! :p We have a...... Hmmmm what would we call it? A...... Leosatin Rexgora
