I have a 5 month old champagne D'Argent buck. For the past two days his urine has been blood red and today I noticed a clot about the size of my fingernail. His testicles also look shriveled compared to older bucks I have. He was at a rabbit show all weekend so he may be stressed from the changes(he won best of breed- Yeah) I am calling the vet tomorrow but would appreciate any advice. I read the previous threads but none seemed to address a clot in the urine. The clot was red in color. Thanks for any help.

Has he been jostled or something recently? I don't know really how likely it is but a contusion to the kidney can cause bloody urine and even "chunks" sometimes...he'd be REALLY ouchy where he got bumped though.

In dogs and cats blood clots usually indicate bladder infections.

Bacteria erodes the bladder and urethral lining causing inflamation and blood to coat the surface, then when the bladder is emptied small sheets of this material is flushed out.

Do you have access to urine testing strips, you can't get them over the counter here but they are likely available in the States. It's a thin little strip of paper with small square patches that you pee on and the patches change colour to tell you how much blood, protein etc... is in the urine.

If there is blood in the urine it is likely infection or trauma. If there is blood AND protein in the urine it is probably a severe infection and not trauma.

The vet is treating him for a bladder infection and put him on a special critical care diet. He is happily hopping around the kitchen enjoying his special care. Hopefully the medicine will make his bladder and bowels normal again soon. I appreciate your responses. Its nice to have knowledgeable people to share info with!
