I have two New Zealand does that were suppose to have babies on the 28th & 29th! STILL NO BABIES!!! One of the does I can feel the babies moving. The other I feel nothing. They also haven't started pulling hair. My question is when should I start to get worried? This is the first time that I can think of that it has took this long to have babies. :?

Relax,
let nature take it's course and perhaps in a day or two
you will see little bounce piles of rabbit fur.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

i was thinking the same things when i was waiting for my dutch doe on her last litter. she waited until that night to pull fur and make a nest. whereas before she would frantically be pulling hay out of her feeder on day 26, frantically nest on 27 when i put it in, and remake it several times and start pulling fur the day before she kindled. and she kindled on day 31. this time she didnt touch a thing until after 10pm when i last checked her and didnt pull any fur until then too. lets just say i was antsy hahaha.

i'd guess if you cant feel anything on the one doe then she isnt going to have any. but since its so late anyhow i would leave the nest in with her for a bit just to make sure. not really any harm leavin it in there.

and for the one that you can feel babies... i know its terrible... but you have to wait... hahaha. take it from me, i hate the waiting part. but thats all ya can really do right now.

Mine's sometimes go to day 32, 34, and one 34. And it's not consistent either, with each doe, they do something different every time. Except one, who makes a nest a week early, everyone else varies. One never made a nest. I saw her picking up some hay in the mouth. I put the box in, I had to put the hay in because she kept dumping and scattering it till it was all gone, I made the nest, put some old fur in it and she had kits that night. Good thing I watch my does like a hawk!

Those fickle does!!!! Make us all wait so long!

My NZ doe went to 32 days. Looked like she swallowed a volleyball, she was soooooo pregnant.

Can't wait to see how it turns out for you!

Nothing yet..... But she is starting to pull hair just a tiny bit but its something! I put hay in her box the 27th but she's done ate it all lol We have had some rain here (thank god!!) But all my hay got wet!!! So i can't use the hay, So I put pine shavings in her box last night. needless to say she already has them all raked out and the bottom of the box is wire so i don't know what to do at this point! I put wire in the bottom cause I live in Arkansas and the summers here is HOT!!!! we are already reaching in the 90's. My kids have a softball game tonight so i'm sure she will do something then!

Thank you I thought it was cute!

__________ Thu May 31, 2012 3:38 pm __________

Well I went out to check on her again. She's pulled more hair but not enough to cover the wire floor. So I put more pine chips! (Husband will be proud since it's for his chickens nest boxes and he don't have much left LOL) She rakes them out of her box right in front of me (darn rabbit). I also checked to see if I could feel the other rabbits babies but i still can't feel anything like i can on the other one. I don't think she's prego! :?

Love that avatar, Sara! Hubs and the "pups" thought it was hilarious, too. One concern we have though... surely that rabbit is not hunting wabbits?!?

I use wire nests also, and I line them with cardboard. I am in CA, so the temps aren't that extreme, but in the warm months I cut strips about 2"-3" tall for the sides, front, and rear- enough to keep the bedding and straw in as they build the nest. You will need to zip tie them to the wire or the doe will use them as building material! I put a cardboard bottom inside the nest itself, but if the heat is a real concern to you, you could put the cardboard underneath the box. Once the nest is formed and the kits are born you could remove it- but I think the cross ventilation from the sides should be adequate. You could even remove the side panels I guess.

Since you don't have hay or straw for bedding, you could substitute shredded paper. I like to use brown paper grocery bags that I run through our paper shredder, but white paper works too.

I went out this morning and she is franticly pulling hair! So it should not b long(hopefully) My nest box is a wire bottom with wood sides. My hubby made it. Hes going to have to make another but im not sure how I want it made. I can't really find one that I like. I'm thinking an open top but I don't know if u cut down one of the sides or no. Does nyone know of a post on here somewhere with some pics of nest boxes? Mamasheepdog I think he's hunting people the way people hunt rabbits lol! :D

Here is a pic of the wire style. Note the spring closure on the front- very handy when kits start leaving the nest, since you can open it and they can easily climb back into the nest.

Congratulations Sara!!!

Here is a look at my nest box ... they also have solid bottom as I was worried about rats and cats getting to the babies.

The broken black doe is sitting on top of hers:
