I know rabbits don't have heat cycles, but is it possible for a 7 month rabbit to have a period? This evening at feeding time my new Satin had blood in her cage pan. Definitely blood, not just red urine. Was very concerned so checked for broken toes, bite wound, etc. Checked her anal area as I wormed all my adults with Safeguard earlier in the day. Nothing around anus, but vulva is very swollen, wet, and tinged with blood. All other rabbits have no signs and this doe is acting fine and eating. What's going on???

Oops mating is always a possibility I guess. Although the breeder I got her from knows what she is doing. She has lots of children though, so the bunnies could have gotten some "play time" together? Are you thinking she is going in to labor Sagebrush?

that was my first thought also, I'd give her a nest box and material for nesting pronto. people here have talked about rabbits even breeding through the wire so...Praying its kitts because  if not ........

I'm not sure if there are any animals that menstruate. Some pass blood when in heat but that's mostly limited to canine and feline species. Probably some other fairly large carnivores or omnivores. Prey animals tend to want to avoid announcing their presence and attracting predators with blood. Labor or an infection would be my guesses. Either a uterine infection or a very bad urinary tract infection.

I'll put in a nest box and see what happens I guess. It's odd that she hasn't shown any signs of infection or injury. Rabbits do hide everything though. No licking or matted fur around area, urine looked normal to me for the past week. No lack of water intake, or excessive drinking. Well we will see how this proceeds. Fingers crossed!

I agree to give her a nest to be safe.

I had an unsolved "bloody mystery" recently where there was blood spattered on the cage wire and feeder. I couldn't find any injuries or even a torn toenail, and never did figure out where it came from. :?

I just cleaned the blood off of the wire and feeder and kept a careful eye on that rabbit (and her cage wire and feeder!) for any more "evidence" for a few days.

-- Sun May 18, 2014 10:13 pm --

No. I *thought* it was only higher primates that menstruated (shed the uterine lining on a cycle when no eggs implant), but I looked it up to be sure.

And... surprise, surprise, there are two animals aside from primates that do. Ready?

Bats and elephant shrews.

Another not so good possibility is a uterine infection or a uterine tumor... :( Hopefully, it's just kits...keeping my fingers crossed!

Yay! :bouncy:

So glad it wasn't something "bad"! :D

I hope her delivery goes smoothly and she gives you a nice litter of kits.

Even experienced breeders sometimes forget to write things down right away. ;)

It looks like she gave you a "package deal"!

lol  just hoping she is okay. A litter of viable kits would definitely be a bonus!
hahaha make up for that supermodel white doe that refuses to get pregnant and so far has maxed out at 6 1/2 pounds  I was joking with the breeder at the show last Saturday that she needs to keep her mini rex under control  they are sneaking in with the "big girls."
Almost wish I had to go to work today, the suspence is killing me :drunk:
