Hi all, as some may know I had some questions recently about breeding my does. I was just wondering, can you tell me how long you leave your doe in with the buck and do you supervise? The book I have says to put her in his cage, let him get it over quick and move her back, don't leave them alone together.

Since I'm still new to this please share with me your experiences,

Thanks,

Matt

I left my doe in long enough to do his business a few times then take her out,and yes, I do should supervise,
the doe/buck can hurt each other if left to long with each other, but all does and bucks are different

I let the buck and doe run around the rabbit room while I do chores in there so I do supervise.

The male can get aggressive with an uncooperative doe and she may get mean with him so I would never just leave her in his cage.

I agree. Let him cover her 2-3 times, then take her out. I would NEVER leave them unsupervised. That's asking for trouble.

When the buck falls off, the date is over. I bring the doe over to him for 2 or 3 sessions in a 1 to 2 day period.

With an inexperienced buck, it may take a little more time for him to figure it out. Once he's got the math right a couple times then he'll know what job it is that needs to be done.

I use to leave the buck with the doe for up to three weeks but wont be doing that again. Our New Zealand red buck got agressive to a doe and ripped her nose half off.

They were fine when I checked on them and blood and fur everywhere when I got back.

But every buck and doe is different, his daddy has never hurt or even pawed at a doe but this one is all over them, mashing and pushing at them.

Three red kits by him are in the nest box so as soon as a replacement is old enough, away he goes.

Hello Matt,
I just want to post my opinion
I do not usually leave a Doe in with a Buck unattended.
The deed should be over within five minutes.
I allow the Buck to service the Doe twice at this meeting,
then back to her cage she goes. The date of breeding is recorded
and date for nestbox listed. I do not bring them back for re-breeding
later that day or in three days. It would ber a waste of mine and the rabbits time.
Time would be better spent having your Buck breed another Doe.
As always, JMPO.

Standard is to supervise, but my lot went climbing in the night and in the morning the buck and both does were all in together (they had been in adjacent pens for a few weeks so weren't strangers). They have been fine all together ever since - but I did initially plan for a colony so there is lots of space for them to get out of the way, and I always have lots of room around food (so throw in 4 or 5 chunks of carrot, not just 3 to fight over, etc)

Well the chin pair are together,it's a large cage, but normally no, besides I don't care for unscheduled litters. my biggest litters were one time and out she goes. My does tend to have the same amount of kits whether it's one fall off one day or multiple breedings one day, or another 8 hrs later, so I just stopped putting them in more than once. I am a bit short on patience too, if they deed is not done in 5minutes, I remove her and put her into another bucks cage. I've got some aggressive breeders now. I'm so proud of my boys this month.

Matt, don't know if anyone mentioned it, but do not take your eyes off them even for a second. If you do you could miss the breeding. When I put mine together I watch every second, I would not even turn around to grab something.

I don't leave them unsupervised and I usually hold the doe. I don't have time to waste for the chasing around the cage business.

I have tried that but it REALLY puts my bucks off. How do you manage it?

It depends on the buck. Three will not get near me when my hand is in the cage. The others will mount my hand if I don't pull it out fast enough.
