Today I was playing with my Netherlands Dwarf Rabbit and he started losing a lot of fur. Not like normal molting, like full on looked like he got a buzz cut. I've never seen this happen to him for the two years he's been on this planet. I could use some advice or knowledge because I'm scared for my little guys health!! Thanks!

That looks like a molt to me... Like maybe he's retained his winter coat waaaaaay too long. It's not down to bare skin, is it?

Mind you, I am used to seeing Lionheads go from complete puffballs to having a clean, short, smooth saddle area, lol. When my rabbits do that, I celebrate, it means junior grooming is over!

Whenever he's molted in the past his fur has stayed the same length, he's just changed colour and lost a lot of fur. He's never been this.. naked ! I can't see his skin, but the fact that his fur is so short is really freaking me out!

Kind of looks like molting, which is normal.

Scroll down to see an image of it. http://www.bunnymomma.com/health.htm

The fur underneath looks healthy to me. Mind you, I know very close to nothing  but I wouldn't worry about it too much if he seems otherwise OK.

Thank you so much everyone ! You've definitely calmed my nerves. I'm kind of a rabbit noob, and I've never seen my little Velveteen molt like this before ! It's always been so subtle.

The fur growing in has nice density and sheen. I think the reason it is so short is...

Velveteen Lop? Part Rex? :hmm:

I am guessing that he is molting out his "normal" fur and growing Rex fur. :p

If that is the case, please keep us updated. I am working on maned standard Rex, and am curious to see if it is a possibility.

looks like he's just having a heavy moult. I would pull all the loose hair that I possibly could in order to prevent wool block.

my Holland lop buck is molting just like that, we are brushing him every day and the fur is still flying!

Welcome to RT, ErikaVincent!

What a scary way to join us. I agree, it looks like a molt to me. I would definitely try and help your bun shed all he can to prevent a blockage.

Hope you stick around here with us. We would love to see more pics of your bun (besides just his backside :))

Thank you very much everyone <3 Little Velveteen seems to be doing fine so I'm not so concerned anymore! You guys definitely helped a lot !!

Don't worry, just molt. I had a satin angora doe once that would shed out to the skin when she blew her coat. Had to be careful about sunburn, but man was it hilarious to see a mostly naked bunny!
