This may seem like a stupid question, but I want to make sure.

Peanuts are only a problem with the dwarf breeds, correct?

__________ Mon Apr 01, 2013 2:19 pm __________

Ah ha! Found a list.

These breeds carry a DWARF gene:
•American Fuzzy Lop
•Dwarf Hotot
•Holland Lop
•Jersey Wooly
•Lionhead Rabbit
•Mini Rex
•Mini Satin
•Netherland Dwarf

After thinking about it I'm not sure I want to mention this on the page. Since I raise NZs the dwarf gene is not relative. I'm afraid if I start mentioning things that do not have to do with my breed some people will think that my list is comprehensive of more breeds than just the NZs (and it is not even completely that).
I think I am going to mention something in that vein at the beginning of the page. That way they know that if they are looking into getting some other breed they need to research more. I'm going to go ahead and put some website links for the dwarf gene on my links page.
Sound good?

That sounds like a good idea to me....

Would you mind if I borrowed some of what you wrote as well?
I do breed dwarf rabbits, but I would just edit that to suit my own needs. I would agree that you don't need to add information (other than helpful links :) ) that is not relevant to the breed(s) that you personally raise/sell. To much information can be intimidating to new rabbit people! :)

Sounds good, I thought it was just a generic rabbit how-to site, but if you don't breed dwarfs then it is not really relevant, and neither are pinched hips, I have not heard of a rabbits over 6 pounds having difficulty giving birth with pinched hips. Obviously they are not something that should be bred but are not life threatening like in smaller rabbits.

But i do like the idea of having the links to help direct people to the problems unique to the dwarf breeds.

Sorry if I did not make that clear. I have basic how-to pages on my website to point buyers to as a start. Just as a way of helping prepare them for getting a rabbit, but I want to just focus on the NZs.

Right, I just want people to know they are undesirable. And since I can't make sure that the rabbit bought as a pet won't turn into a breeder (as you said) I decided to just leave it.

Thanks. I added a couple. :)

Teeth- Make sure they are nice and straight and fit together well.

No, you do not want the teeth to fit together well
The top teeth should slightly overlap the bottom teeth
for the proper alignment.
You don't want Wolf-teeth, but
you don't want Peg Teeth either.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

For a rabbit an overlap is fitting well ;)

Do you have a general NZ fact sheet to include with it?

I am working on an about NZs page. Should include some other stuff as well.

Right now I am also working on putting together a farm and then a sheep website for my Mom. All the information there is to read on Shetland sheep is making me dizzy! :stars:

Polish Dwarfs don't have the dwarf gene?

I don't know. The list is just one I found somewhere. Guess it is not complete.

__________ Tue Apr 02, 2013 11:19 am __________

Found the website and I missed part of what was there. Here is the rest.

From http://www.raising-rabbits.com/dwarf-rabbits.html
I didn’t list the Polish rabbit or the Britannia Petite above, because technically, these miniature breeds are not ‘dwarfed.’

True Britannia Petites have been selectively bred for their tiny size - 2 1/2 pounds as an adult. (Max 3 1/2 pounds for Polish rabbits.) However, according to the American Britannia Petite Rabbit Society, most Britannia Petite bloodlines in the USA have been ‘corrupted’ with genes from Netherland Dwarfs in order to obtain a desired color gene. Along with the varied colors, the dwarf gene came along for the ride. Breeders of some "brit" bloodlines now find peanuts in their litters.

The same may also be true of some Polish rabbit lines.
