I have had 2 rabbits since late January, a male and a female. The female (Mini Lop) stays inside in a fairly large cage, and the male (Californian) is housed outside in a 2 story hutch with a 4ft by 4ft dog pen attached so he can roam and graze on the grass.
At first I housed him just in the hutch and he would eat hay from his makeshift hay rack, when I added the pen on I noticed he quit eating the timothy hay, I would lay it in various places but nope didn't want to eat it, he was still drinking plenty of water and eating his pellets (Manna Pro). So I read somewhere that they should have hay where they rest or use the bathroom they will be more likely to eat it then. So, since he poops in one corner of the pen I laid a pile of hay and he ate it till it was gone so he got more and I rotate the pen around so he doesn't ever sit in a large pile of his own poop, anyway to my question. I have noticed he will have little boogers on his nose, not large and not very visible but it is there, we have been having some cold nights down into the 30s (F). He is very active and seems fine, he will binky around in the pen when I go out to feed him or bring him hay, and he will even lay on his stomach with his legs sprawled out (read this meant he was very comfortable and feels safe). Do I need to take him to the vet to have a culture done? Should I just keep an eye on it? I was wondering if he is allergic to either the aspen wood shaving I use for his bedding, was using cedar at first, I put some fleece and towels in his nest box because he likes to stay up in that when he sleeps and I figured it would keep him warm. I interact with both rabbits and the female does not have the boogers. I appreciate any insight and information. Thanks, Matt.
