We don't cull because we don't care, we cull because we do.

The reason I would cull if a rabbit had Snuffles is because I don't want it to die harshly and suffer. I would rather get it over with easily to where he never even knew he felt bad. And so it wouldn't risk EVERYONE's lives.

Just sayin, we don't cull because we are careless breeders. :)

And if you are breeding for meat or sales it is downright unethical to keep a sick animal knowing it could infect an animal to be sold or eaten. Breeders don't want to get a reputation for passing off inferior lines or sickly animals.

Well it's not pasteurella. I just had
Him to the vet. So don't have to worry
About being unethical.

__________ Tue Aug 20, 2013 4:09 pm __________

I'm not a breeder for a living anyways. So
Don't need to worry about that aspect nor my
Kits or the other bun. So I'm all good hopefully,
To recovery here shortly.

If you just have pet buns, your priorities are different. I was just pointing out a very valid reason for culling hard and why some breeders take that route.

Ok, I would maybe look at it differently if I
Did cull for a living or bred. I can see that
It would be a different aspect if I did breed
Or cull for a living. :)

Heat stroke.

__________ Tue Aug 20, 2013 5:02 pm __________

He was REALLY hot. I had frozen water bottles
In there for him too. But he's a Dutch and its
85 with heat index of a 100 so it's pretty hot
Need to keep him in side. The et gave him a HUGE
siringe of fluid and a steroid. So now looking
For reverse signs cause the vet said it could
Happen. So far no signs of that and he's running
Around and eating so think we're on the train
For recovery.

Yes, he looked like that. I forgot to mention this on here and the yet.
Noticed a sore on Thumps leg. Just a little sore
By his foot. Didn't think much of it and now when I
Looked it was bigger so I kind of
Squeezed it and some light yellowish
Stuff came out of it. Now what? I forgot
To ask the vet to look at it. Didn't notice
It bigger till I checked it after we were back home.
I'm hoping I got that stuff all out. Kind looks
Like a pin hole in the sore type hard ball.

What did your vet say it was?

Heat stroke.

Did he look like this:

The white snot is still cause for concern, though. Did the vet swab his mucous membranes and do a culture?

For the photos. Yes, he looked like that.
He was really wet under his chin
And it was like dripping. Nasty!!!

__________ Tue Aug 20, 2013 5:24 pm __________

Sorry sheepdog didn't see the test of your post.
No she didn't. I did mention the whitish snot and
She just thought it was from his drool cause he had
It up around his nose and all over his feet from licking.

She did not at all think it was snuggles or pasteurella
At all. I just saw a tiny little bit of the whitish looking
Fluid just that one time. He did not have the
Whiteish looking fluid today at al at any time.

It sounds like it may have been heat stroke but I still am concerned by the white snot. Unless the vet did a swab of the nasal discharge - and already had the results, which seem unlikely - you cannot rule out pasteurella brought to the surface by the stress of the heat.

It is heat stroke. All I know is that
She didn't think it was being that of
All the times that I checked on him and
What she saw was no white fluid she didn't
Think that it was pasteurella at all. That's all
I know.

I have him inside where it's cool, no drooling
Sneezing, or white fluid.

Heat stroke sounds plausible. I would continue to keep him quarantined for a minimum of 30 days. Mind your doe first, and don't visit or handle her after you've been with him.

I'm very concerned that you said it's been hot and humid. Humidity and dampness are the Grim Reaper for bunnies.

It's also concerning that you're describing what sounds like an abscess on his leg. You should return him to the vet to have the "hard ball" removed surgically if necessary. Rabbits are not very good at fighting off infections.

Rabbits are hardy creatures until they are compromised, then everything can go wrong very quickly. I had to euthanize a doeling who went from happy-hoppy to death's doorstep from diarrhea in less than 24 hours. Her hutch got damp.
