So, my beautiful avatar doggy Sassy is expecting and seems to be beginning labor today. We were going to get her spayed a few months ago, but some things came up. We weren't terribly worried because her only exposure to a male is our elderly Jack Russell, who is much much smaller than she is. Well, apparently, they found a way.

I got a welping box built and ready. I am keeping a close eye on her today. I haven't been involved in a welping in years. Anything else I need to look for or do?

Congrats on the pupple!

Any chance that we get to see the octogenarian sire? :p He must be very proud...

"Yup... I still got it!"

Eagerly awaiting pics!

Well, I am finally awake and semi-coherent.

My darling Sassy survived the births and is doing fine. She is an excellent mama so far...to her TEN puppies!! Yes, ten. I was shocked. All are alive and well with fat tummies this morning.

Here is the sire, my Scooter, the old (but apparently still wiley) man:

And here are the pupples:

I have yet to sex them. So far, I think the brindle is my favorite.

For you dog breeders/smart folks, a question: I know the demands on my Sassy are going to be crazy. I would love to help her. Any foods I can give her to help her out? I was thinking proteins and maybe milk. Thoughts? (along with free choice high protein dog food, of course)

I do try to be a responsible steward to my animals. So please allow me a PSA:

Have your pet spayed or neutered unless you are a breeder. Don't assume you can prevent it from happening, despite how vigilant you might be. It WILL happen despite your best efforts.

I showed, trained, trialed and bred dogs for most of my life. My Grma showed St Bernards, my Gr Aunt trained and trialed Pointers so I grew up in the dog world.

I wouldn't give milk. That has a great potential for causing an upset tummy. It really depends what your dog is used to.

I fed a 30% protein and 20%fat (or more). For the evening meal I add whatever protein (meat, seafood) plus some veggies. The dog's get unbreaded, barely seasoned cooked food. I will add some extra carbs towards the end of a pregnancy, a piece of french bread or some pasta, something like that.

Bread and pasta along with some meat never upset my dogs tummys. Sometimes I'd give a hardboiled egg or some scrambled eggs. I have had litters of 13, make sure you are cleaning the whelping box multiple times a day because otherwise she will eat all their waste and it will give her diarreha which is not good when she is nursing.

Watch all the pups, I used to weigh mine at the same time ea day. In a large litter you have to be careful that everyone is getting nursed.

I would wait a couple weeks to a month after she weans the pups and then spay.

If you are getting dew claws done, that needs to happen tomorrow or Saturday at the latest. Monday is too late, nerves will be too developed and it will bother the pups. At a day old, the removal of dew claws doesn't bother the pups.

If you do dew claws or need to go to the vet with them, keep them in a box with towels, do not wait inside in the waiting room with them, too easy for them to pick up some virus or disease. Tell the receptionist to call your cell or come outside to get you. Be very careful with people washing hands before handling pups.

They look like very cute pups, congratulations!

Thanks for the info, Laura. I have given her some eggs (she gets one every day, just scrambled her up a few), and some high protein food with a little veggie oil added for fat. I am going to get her some good puppy food this weekend. She is used to buttermilk (she finishes my hubby's nightly glass), so I will give her a little of that as well.

I sexed the pups. We have two females- the white and the dark solid one that looks like chestnut. The rest are males. All are doing well.

BH- I would love to know that any of my pups had as good a home as I know they would have with you :)

Oh no, it wouldn't have a wonderful life with me... my dog's tortured horribly. Right now he's being smothered to death with a comforter on my bed!!

They're so sweet. I've had puppyosis lustosis for quite some time now, and this is just making it worse!!

:congratulations:

What a lovely litter! Make sure to post pics as they grow. I wonder if they will be big like Sassy, little like Scooter, or something in between?

That broken brindle? Yeah, that can be shipped to Canada. Inbox me for address :p

Curses! You beat me to the pup!

I'll take one of the black and whites instead, I guess. :)

We do our pup's dew claws and tails ourselves. I use nail scissors and snip the claws off close to the leg. Styptic powder and pressure applied to the wound stops the bleeding quickly, and we also put a droplet of Super-Glue on the area.

You probably aren't planning on docking tails, but I use the banding method. Edited to add- this is done at nine days of age.

I have an emasculator (for wethering goats and sheep) which applies thick rubber bands. The bands naturally constrict between the vertebrae, cutting the blood flow to the end of the tail, which dries up and falls off in a few days.

Thanks for that info MSD on the dew claws. I am going to talk to hubby tonight and see if I can convince him to try that.

Not going to dock the tails, but I had no idea you could do that with banding!

FYI, one of the black and whites has a big "M" on his side. Just sayin'.

Good luck with that- it is like pulling teeth trying to get the family together to help! Nobody likes causing pain, no matter how brief and beneficial to the animal in the long run.

I think it is the most humane way to do so, and there is no blood loss. A few years ago one of our kittens got its tail slammed in the catcoop door, breaking it. I banded the tail, and made a long tailed Manx!

"M" for "Mine"... or "Marinea's"? :hmm:

Oh My! They are so adorable! I want a pupple! :p
Mmm... I'll take the brown and white one.. Or no, a black and white one... Wait, I want the blond looking one... Oh bother! I want them all!

Now I'll go find my Mom so she can tell me what she has to tell me at least 2 times a week...
:nono:  *sigh*
