We expected our first litter of the year Monday. Nest box went in Friday and Berwick made a tunnel, pulled fur right away. Now it's Wed afternoon and no kits. I know from reading posts on RT that does can kindle up to day 40. But it hasn't happened to us before--every doe that had anything that looked like a possible breeding has kindled on day 31 or there have been kits in the nest in the morning of day 32. This would be Berwick's 7th litter for us--she'll be 3 years old later this year. She was bred to Beau, the buck we started using last spring when he was 7 months old.
So I'm trying to understand and to decide when and whether to rebreed her. Is length of gestation an individual thing--do you usually expect a doe to be consistent from breeding to breeding? Would it change with age? I know weight can be a factor in not getting pregnant and we do a quick feeling along the back check weekly. Also hear time between breedings given as reason a doe might not "take" but the spacing is the same this year as last. Anything else I should be checking?
I know I'm supposed to just wait patiently but I'm not so good at that--was especially looking forward to this litter as a sign of coming spring, however cold it still is.

Mine usually are the about the same each time, unless there is a problem or they obvously arent bred. I would also think (just based off other female mammels) that age would for sure play some role in this, but more with the number of kits or birthing difficulty (I guess it could fall into that back).

We decided to breed her again tomorrow--Friday--as that will fit best with the rest of our breeding plan for spring/early summer. Hope the rest of the plan works better. Not off to a very good start this year and it's confusing because it all went well the other years and these were proven, buck and doe, that's why we started with her. Expected more of this when we started, but didn't expect it now. Live and learn.

Just when you think you are in a good groove......I hope it all picks up for you! Thats animals for you I guess:)

We tried to rebreed her yesterday--day 35. She was not cooperative--growled at the buck, hopped into his hanging bucket with her front pointed out. Checked her vent and it was purple. She hasn't been hard to breed before. She's eating normally and has normal droppings. I'm mystified. Have read on here about does having one large kit but haven't experienced it. How would such a doe act? Would such a pregnancy run long like this. Any other suggestions for what is going on or what to watch for or what to do?
