I had 3 does kindle last week (6/24)... the first one had a couple on the wire a day or two before, then the rest in the nest box. I am thinking there were some complications since out of who-knows-how many (we know for sure 3 DOA - found her eating one, then another dead one, and a head of a 3rd) only 2 survived, and one of those is not at all thriving (still looks like a NB kit??). They are in hutches over dirt/grass/weeds so it's not easy to monitor poop and urine unless I am looking specifically for it... but I noticed some red on the hay and hair stuck on the wire one morning. I checked back later and same thing. I put a bowl under where she pees and it caught some very dark orange/red urine. I am not sure what to do for something like that?? I am 99% sure that wasn't an issue until she kindled... and the fact that she still has quite a bit of belly I am wondering if she has some retained kits? Any ideas what's going on or what I can do?

Found this:

So, maybe it's not blood? But still a definite red flag...

If you think she has retained a kit you can give lavender buds, that will help to expel anything still in there. Also add apple cider vinegar 2 Tbs. per gallon of water if she has an infection that should acidify her urine and help to clear it up.She will also drink more water that way, also helping to clear her urinary tract. If you can foster the viable kit over that would relieve any stress on the doe...then you can give her mint to dry up the milk or re breed her.I think I would hold off on re breeding until her urine clears up, but then it may not be anything to worry about, sometimes feeding things like Kayle gives a bun red pee. :?:

They have ACV water most every day already so that's done! I have some lavender blooming now. The kits are looking pretty rough anyway... looks like they keep peeing on themselves??

Will it hurt to do mint and lavender simultaneously - or should I do one then the other?

-- Sat Jul 04, 2015 2:03 pm --

Oh, and do I need to do anything to transition the kit(s) over since it has been a week?

She may have a leaky bladder due to the pressure and straining at birth...hence the peeing...if you foster over, take out the nest and put in the new ones give them a couple of minutes to squirm with the new family..then put the box in. Once mom feeds them they are hers. Then start with the lavender just a few buds..then mint a few sprigs..I would alternate giving one in the morning then the other in the evening. Should only take a few days. Does are pretty good at self regulating so if she doesn't want it she doesn't need it..but content to offer. Sorry I thought mom was peeing on them..that could be pee or milk, just wipe them down before fostering. I have successfully fostered at two weeks so your chances are good.. :)

She sniffed the lavender... then turned her back on it. Hmmm... wasn't there another herb with a similar effect?

I got the kits transferred over. It has the mama all on edge - she was trying to attack the does in the cages next to her! I guess maybe she thought they were in her nest box??? Going to keep an eye on her... I watched for a few minutes and she seemed to settle down.

Funugreek. ..blue cohash..or maybe just try tums? All will stimulate contractions..
Momma will be upset, looking for her little ones..but she will calm down.. you can also breed her...that has its own risks though...if she doesn't have anything in there she will be having more kits on 31 days....

I have been reading on this and apparently whjite/ yellow/ orange / red are all normal pee colours and may change with various things... When I put some softwood shavings into the pens to fall through over pee spots below, my HLop buck ate some... next day, red pee. So I experimented, and sure enough~ if any ate them, red pee :) I would worry more with a kindled doe, but it could just be normal.
