Very interesting!! :D Thanks!!

Also, that's interesting that steels may grow better....I wouldn't have thought the fur coloring would be related to their growth... :?

I'm not sure it is. It's just one of those hard-to-track-down rumors. Maybe a wives tale, but maybe worth investigating.

I know that steel is extremely common in new zealands(hidden under the white), americans, silverfox, and probably calis too. Dood had a super steel (EsEs) cali.
It's also invisible on a genetic self, so most people who breed purebred meat rabbits just never see the genes.
It doesn't really matter though, since they are judged on phenotype (what they look like) instead of genotype ;)

So is it possible to know if this kit has steel?
[album]3337[/album]

Its chin is white, its belly is white with brindling...
Or is it too old to tell for sure? (you said 7 days)

It's easiest to ID steel when kits are small, and it gets more difficult as they age. The best time is between 7 and 10 days, when the white on their agouti marks shows up really well.
I'd say, that kit isn't a steel. :)

Just seeing this now. I never knew anyone else experienced Steels growing better. Every one of mine grew noticeably faster than their non-Steel litter mates. Hmmm. :hmm:

I have another question.....

The little black doe out of Dovetuft (lilac) is growing white hairs. It started on her belly, went to her front legs, and is gradually creeping up her sides. Is this how a silver fox gets its silvering, or is this something else? They are not white-tipped, there are white hairs mixed in with the black.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the silver gene but I'm not familiar with how it spreads across a coat - I thought it usually started around the face

in my past litters I got plenty of GTS in the litters and my biggest doe was GTS. I would say in hindsight that I think if I had to divide all the kits I ever grew out into 50/50 bigger and smaller... there would be a lot more GTS on the bigger side than the smaller side. of my top 5 biggest kits that I thought of keeping as breeders, I think 3 of em were GTS. but that might be skewed slightly since I did end up getting plenty of GTS in the litters?

i'm trying to remember where I read about steel and being bigger... hmm... I really wanna say an old thread from Cattle Cait? when she was doing her homestead rabbit line or something? she culled specifically to the biggest and best growing of the mutts and she was ending up with mainly steels?
I could be wrong but that's my remember-er for the moment.
