Ok, heat is ridiculous!
I am wondering how small I can make the pens for the does w/litters? How big should the buck pens be?

I'm thinking of having the bucks each in their own pen, 5x5 pens, could they be smaller? Will move the buck in with the does and watch or take the does out individually to be bred and once it's successful, put them back.

I have the following rabbits currently; 2x SF does, 1x SF buck, 1x AmChin doe, 2X Cali does, 1x Cali buck.

I have a trio of Cali from my Cali pair, should I keep the 2 does for breeding in with my 2 adults or just eat them and only stick with the 2 current adults?

I am getting a new SF buck and 2 more SF does. If any of the AmChin's kits are does, I may keep one or two for breeding.

So I guess I am seeing; SF pen of 3 does and 2 buck pens. Cali pen of 2 or 4 does and one buck pen. AmChin pen with 2 or 3 does. What size pens, as small as possible, but large enough for each grouping of does? Should I do 5x5ft area per rabbit? Should they be larger than that or rectangles instead?

I need to make double the pens to allow switching to fresh grass, or should I skip that and just buy a scythe and hack new grass for them each night? That's what I do for the 12x13ft grow out pen I have.

How tall should the fence be to keep the rabbits in? I do not have a predator concern, just an escaping rabbit worry. I will be putting up roofing on at least half the pen to give them shade and rain protection. And then add fencing or a solid roof later on. So...2ft with roof. What height w/o any roofing?

Should I be trying to place the pens under my Pine tree row? Or out in full sun? There's more space and grass in the open area, maybe just the does under the trees?

Do I have to dig the fencing down into the ground? If so, how deep to make sure they do not go digging under it?

I'm gonna start drawing up a picture for it and draw on a picture of the property.

I'm very new to all this, but I think I can answer some of your questions. I don't know about the size.
But, with all this heat, (and if you live in Virginia then you don't have a cold problem) then I would go with shady pens. And if you go with shady pens, then you probably will end up cutting grass for them. And as for the predators- everywhere, even the city, has predators. I don't think that it is possible for you not to have predators... you probably just don't see them. So I would say that you should make it has high as you want with a roof. I know some people say that you should dig to put down a wire floor so they can't dig their way out, but you don't really have to dig at all. You could just put the wire on top of the grass- and you wouldn't have to dig up all the grass. You could bury it if you want, instead of digging, but I don't think its necessary. You could provide with with a digging place, like a pile of dirt or a box with a phone book in it, if you wanted.

Like I said, I'm new, but that's what I would do.

If it wasn't so danged nasty out, I'd be setting up some kind of moveable pen for the growers...no rain w/too much heat=no new grass...

__________ Fri Jul 06, 2012 8:38 am __________

Ok...well I moved them all into the Pup's pen. The grass in there is dense and a little tall. There's not enough grass to pull elsewhere. Hopping they can mow it down some for me.
