Don't mind me, I've just been perusing this site, so much to learn. I am more used to discussing high versus low escutcheons, new to rabbits, so enlighten me. Could anybody show me a picture of "pinched hips"? I have a picture in my head, want to make sure it's right. I will understand if nobody has any pictures because nobody has rabbits with pinched hips. :D

Ya got me, Andyva... I had to look that up. This from Wikipedia:

Escutcheon (heraldry), a shield or shield-shaped emblem, displaying a coat of arms
Escutcheon (furniture), an item of door furniture that surrounds a keyhole or lock cylinder
Escutcheon (firearms), a piece of metal inlet into the wood on the wrist of a gunstock between the tang and the stock comb as decoration and/or engraved for identification.
a decorative plate that surrounds a faucet in a bathtub or shower
(in medicine) the distribution of pubic hair
(in veterinary medicine) the shield-like pattern of distribution of the haircoat in the area below the vulva, down to the top of the udder, in the cow
a plate on the stern of a ship inscribed with the ship's name
A protective cover over circuit breakers in electrical distribution boards.

So... which escutcheons are you accustomed to discussing?

As to pinched hips, one way to tell if they have them is to flip the rabbit over and look at their hocks. They should be parallel and spaced wide apart. If they make a V shape, the rabbit will look "pinched".

I have some kits i am going to cull, I will go out and see if i can get a picture.

See how her feet stick out to the side and her butt is narrower at the bottom?

This is what it looks like when she starts to hop.....

This rabbit has since been culled.

This is a rabbit my sis gave me. Usually when I flip her over, her ankles really do go together in a V shape. When I first saw her walk around, I thought she had her ankles tied together!

Holy Guacamole, OAF!

That's an extreme example. :x

I know, right? :( Poor girl...she was so sweet too....Hubs did "the deed" for me since I was attached to her...

Even though I don't have an arch breed, I like to watch my rabbits run around to get a better idea if they are pinched. I don't want to see the hocks close or touching. With my breed, a lot of people like to scrunch them together in pictures so you see this AMAZING depth but can't tell much about the hindquarters. (although they will look undercut). Right now, my goal is to eradicate pinched hindquarters. I'm very harsh when it shows up in my litters, but it will be worth it in the end :)

I got this comment on some of my bunnies at the show I went to. I think I want to make it a top priority as well. It's hard to tell what their bootys look like under all that wool. Do all pinched hip bunnies have the duck-feet? Do all duck-feet rabbits have pinched hips? Or can one exist without the other?

If your rabbit is cow hocked, you have pinched hindquarters. They go hand in hand with the other. I will even cull does (as much as I need them) just because it's important to have nice, wide parallel feet for the birthing process.

__________ Mon Sep 24, 2012 9:12 pm __________

Examples:

On the top of the list for culling--pinched hq, low shoulders, narrow bodies, bad fur.

The immediately thought "Big Foot", when I saw that first rabbit's big, hairy feet - talk about snow shoes. That is one that, should not (ever) have sore hocks! :)

These are NZW from the TAMUK barn and they have incredibly well furred feet! I am going to just be completely ruthless with culling ANY that have ANY degree of cow hock, just in case. I have not seen any others....just this one, but wow, was she ever bad!
