Pedigree question

I have a question about pedigrees. I have to MR rabbits but never got a pedigree with them. My buck was free because the lady just couldn't get rid of the rest of the litter at the fair and I never asked the lady I got my doe from. I seen my bucks parents but I only got to see my does mother. So how could I if I could start my rabbits having a pedigree or should I just forget about my rabbits having a pedigree. I'm all new with this. Heck I didn't even know rabbits had pedigrees until I became a member on this site so please help me understand.

I've also been wondering about starting pedigrees with purchased unpedigreed rabbits. (Like Mucky, for example) I mean, you wouldn't attach your own rabbitry name to them, so...would they simply have their call names listed?

And since lots of people will be looking here, lacking a proper rabbitry name to attach to my own kits, would I use my last name instead, as I believe I've seen on some pedigrees?

My first worry would be that someone else with the same last name is also doing that!

For unpedigreed rabbits, listing their call name is a good way to go, you could use your last name but note down the breeder the bun came from someway somehow.

I'd like other answers to this too cause it'd be nice to know. :lol:

I have often been told... a pedigree has to start Somewhere.

Start with the rabbits You have...Could use Your last name... or pick a rabbitry name You want to use. Make a record of... the rabbit's Ear #, color and weight.If that is all the information You have... that is the starting point.
When those rabbits have young... the youngsters will have a pedigree with one generation Known behind them. For Youngsters... You would also have a birth date.
Future generations will continue to add more information.

As long as the rabbit was sold as is what is, and not specifically sold as with no pedigree, I know many that take the rabbit call it John's Bippy give it a ear number, color, and senior weight to start their pedigree. I've done this before years ago when my first Mini Rex came with nothing but a stack of note book paper with dates/colors/birth days on them, but I asked the previous owner if they wanted their name on the rabbits or not though.

The pedigree can start with your bunnies! If you keep good records in a couple generations you will have fully pedigreed buns.

No kidding huh! I had no idea that one could just start a registered line on their own! I thought it was like with horses, or goats, where they have to come from registered parents in order to be eligible for registration. There are certain breed registries for rabbits too though, right? Being pedigreed is different than being registered? Can one start a pedigreed line with a totally unknown buck, and a mix breed doe? My buck, Ser. Bunny Lannister bred my friends Satin/D'argent/NZ cross doe, could they be pedigreed?

A pedigree is literally a record of parentage so anything can have a pedigree.
Registration is different matter. With rabbits it means the rabbit meets the minimum requirements for being the breed it is. It needs to be examined by a registrar and the pedigree must be COMPLETELY filled out in all generations.

True... even a Heinz 57 dog can have a "pedigree". Even us Humans have a Family History...that is essentially a pedigree...

Rabbits can be mutts... mutts with a pedigree...pure... pure with a pedigree.... and they can be Registered... as 3mina said...

Rabbits are about the only Livestock that are registered After they make senior weight and meet their breed requirements. In some ways ( in theory) that makes Registered rabbits a "Cut Above" other rabbits. At the least it shows that the owner cared enough to meet those minimum requirements and have the rabbit examined by the registrar ( who CAN deny the registration if they do not feel the animal is of sufficient quality to Be registered)

Additionally... as generations are registered... the Seal on the pedigree will change... from plain... to Red ( if both parents are registered) to Red /White (if both parents and all four Grand-parents are registered) to Red /White /Blue (when All animals on the pedigree are registered.) This shows quite a level of commitment to a breeding program.
There is also a Gold seal... when ALL animals on the pedigree are registered And Grand Champions. Those are few and far between... but is Does happen.

Well, if they are good quality, I would breed them and start your own pedigree. Keep records on who you bred to who, and import rabbits with pedigrees to throw into your own stock. Then, when you have a full pedigree on the babies, then you can start selling to other people. I would never sell or buy rabbits without pedigrees. You can harvest Mini Rex fur if you wanted to get into that end of things. Otherwise I would sell to pet stores until the babies have full pedigrees and can be registered.

I've seen partially pedigreed rabbits for sale. It isn't as good as a full pedigree, but better than nothing!
