Pastuerella

Is this pastuerella? He does sneeze and I can't tell if that is matted hair or just dirty since he's so young (3 1/2 weeks). He's the only survivor out of the couple of dozen kits that died the past few weeks so we were going to keep him, even inside at that, (which is a large step.)



Also, can pastuerella be transmitted to dogs by licking or through the air?

I have never seen them get dirty so far up on their cheeks... but I cull when I see a small glob of snot in their nostrils, and have never had a rabbit get the inside of the legs matted by snot either.

I don't see any matting on the inner legs, and I would expect to if it was snotty since it has stuff on its cheeks.

I would clean its cheeks off, and see if it gets dirty again. You can probably use a fine toothed comb to remove whatever that is.

Pasteurella doesn't actually aerosolize- but if a rabbit sneezes snot directly on your dog's nose, he could possibly get it. Dogs can be treated with antibiotics for it though, so it isn't a death sentence like it is for rabbits.

My dogs are around the rabbits all of the time, as are my barn cats, and they have all remained healthy. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks MSD. The part about the dog puts my mind to rest a little bit. I washed the stuff off its nose yesterday but then went and put it back in its nest box which I'm sure wasn't the cleanest thing in the world so I suppose it 'might' have gotten it from there? I don't know. I see dirty stuff caked on the nose and all the stuff on the hair isn't all that easy to clean off. I could be on the safe side and cull him/her. The wife wouldn't like it but she'd accept it. I kinda want to eat the darn thing if its going to have to die though and theres not enough there to eat at this point lol.

Also, sorry if I put this thread in the wrong spot at first. I don't remember this section being here just a few minutes ago...I'm getting old :wheelcha:
