Yesterday Queenpup and I went to pick up 2500lbs of rabbit feed for myself and our rabbity-friends. When we went to deliver the feed, lo and behold we spied a litter of pups wandering down the road. Not surprising, since the area is littered with stray dogs... free-range fodder for the dog fighting rings of the area.

I don't know what came over me, but I stopped the truck and told Queenpup "Quick! Grab that one!"

Once in the truck, the little mite settled herself on my flannel jacket like she had always been there. :)

She is going to be my little travel dog and attend rabbit shows with me, so she is being trained to a carrier... for now she fits quite nicely in a standard hole, but I do believe she will eventually move up to more spacious quarters- namely my Beveren's travel carrier!

So, without further ado, here is the little worm...

After her bath, snuggled in her new digs:

All tucked in for bed:

Outside last night for a potty break:

This morning, hiding from the "big dogs":

Here is her little bed, which I got from someone who had won it and bunny toys at a rabbit show, but didn't need the bed:

And here she is in her "rescuer" Queenpup's lap:

love the scruffy face :)

Me too! I've never had a scruffy dog before.

that longish body and the wire makes me think there's some dackel in her background :)

I'm guessing she probably has Dachsund (Dackel) in her too. But I doubt that's where the wire hair comes from, just because you rarely see any but smooth dachsunds around. I am guessing she probably has chihuahua and possibly yorkie and maybe JRT in her, since I can't think of any common breeds (in the area) aside from JRT that would give her the wiry coat.

I didn't see the mom, but my breeder friend will be able to point her out to me if she is still alive next time I visit her. Apparently, she had been struck by a car and was dragging her hindquarters. :(

Thanks, all!

She is a cute little thing, isn't she? :D

She has been really good so far. She slept through the night in the rabbit carrier, and she loves her little bed.

She hasn't had any accidents in the house, and has gotten used to the other dogs.

did you name her yet?

Surprisingly, yes I have. It usually takes me forever to name my animals.

We are calling her "Nema", short for Nematode.

And what is a "nematode", you ask? Why, a parasitic worm, of course!

That is an adorable pup! My youngest has been campaigning for a small dog forever and a day. He saw the picture and thought I was getting it for him. Needless to say, there is bitterness in the air, now that he knows the full story.

Aww! Poor little guy!

There was also a scruffy little blond pup, and Queenpup tried to convince me to let her have her too. But when we went looking for the pups again, they were gone. Good thing, because I don't think it would have gone over too well with Hubs if we had brought two little rat-dogs home.

We could catch her for your son though!

How old is your youngest? I begged my parents for a dog from the time I was seven, and finally got my first for my fourteenth birthday. She was the best dog ever, and I taught her over 100 commands. Depending on his maturity level, he very well could develop that strong of a bond with a little dog of his own.

I enrolled her in an obedience class when she was a little over 5 months old. They usually didn't allow dogs (or handlers!) that young, but when I told them she already knew a bunch of commands, they allowed us to enroll. We graduated with a score of 198 out of 200 on the final "exam". :D

After that we enrolled in a trick class, and she was one of their star students. We often performed with the group at resting homes and other events.

Having her and being involved in those and other activities (we also showed in UKC obedience events) was a great way to connect with the community and spend time with good adult role models. Getting him a dog may be just the thing to keep him out of trouble. :)

I bet she loves it with you guys... :)

Yep! She has settled right in! I'll have to post some pics of her with the "big dogs"... she is so tiny, the contrast is hilarious!
