I had a litter once where only 1 baby survived. Her nick name was chunky monkey, because she got so fat being the only kit  That being said she was kept in the house not outside. I do have a litter of 2 week old kits right now outside, only 2 survived and they are doing fine.

How is the weather there? Is it very cold? I have one right now that was the only kit in the litter. It is 3 weeks old and already the size of my other litter that is 5 weeks old. We had some pretty cold days but doe kept the nest impressively fluffy with fur for the first 2 weeks. I think it depends on how well the doe keeps the nest whether you should bring the kit inside or foster it.

I have one here now, it will be a week old tomorrow. I brought it in when the weather was under 50F. I left it out last night. I'm more worried that it will be too big and grow to exceed the breed standard, which won't be a big problem if it's a doe, then I will have a nice big doe for a brood.

It's going to depend solely upon the mother at this point. If she won't care for it, nothing short of fostering it to another doe or taking up primary care for it yourself is going to do the trick.

I'd bring the kit indoors at night and put it out with momma during the day. A lot depends on how much shelter the cages have... Yours are outdoors, aren't they? If it makes it until your other doe kindles, you may be able to foster it then.

I might bring it in at night. But i dont want to foster it over to the moms. IF any i would like to give her one or two more. I hate taking babies from a mom that is doing good ,no matter the size of a litter. They cant count. Lol. SO if i take from one mom that has more than 5, I will give her 2 more.

Yes, Maggie mine are outside. BUt sheltered very well.

Mine are inside only... most in my basement which stays 65 degrees all year round... anyway, I have had 2 different litters where the mom only had one live, and they did great. Mine are Netherlands though, not sure that makes a difference or not. I have found though, it doesn't seem to make a difference on litter size as much as mothering quality. A good mom can raise a single baby as well as a bad mom can let a large litter die.

Thanks. I just brought her inside for the night. I will bring her back out in the morning. She had them at 8 am this morning. So it works out ok. I will do this until it is a week old or if the nights are a little warmer than tonight. I just wanted to make sure it was warm enough. I never had a single baby before.
