So my doe Jet had two kits four weeks and three days ago. Only one lived so I fostered two into her litter and they all did well.

She has NOT visited a buck!

Imagine my surprise just a moment ago to find TWO NEW KITS in her nest box!!!

What do I do?

Can I take her older kits - they are eating and drinking fine - and put them with another doe with kits the same age or are they alright to go into a grow out pen with all the others the same age. I think that would be about 9 or 10 all together to keep eachother warm.

Or will/can she manage the two different age litters?

What do I DOOOOOOOO?

I would bring the older kits indoors and only bring them out to feed in the am for a week or two. The newborns will be too weak and small to compete with the older ones.

I know rabbits cant count, would I be better off putting one each of her three into three exact same age/color litters?

My mum has a new rescue dog and she is NOT SAFE around any prey animal. Ask me how I know

"Things that make you go hmmmm..."
Maybe it's the same with rabbits as some people, all it takes is a look!?

Or flying sperm like for goats

But her next door neighbor is a doe too

I'd heard that some people believed rabbits were born pregnant, now we know why! I'd have to see your cage setup, but it IS possible you have an acrobat buck, some of mine have "marked" each other across a 2 foot divide (aided in part by elevation of the one buck's cage), plus Hairy Houdini got out several times and was found running the drain boards, or out in the yard. If I'd had any does at ground level, he could have danced with them and I'd never know.

I think either option would work.

Thank you so much! Shall try option one and see how they get on.

My gut said it was a good option but my experience is still only two years old so its a bit timid lol.

And my kids reminded me that Jet lived with a buck due to his age and her not caring about him being there (Lack-of-cage-space-itis is a chronic disease here in the South) and I took him out when she had kits so he must have done the deed despite his age, or lack of it.

Wish rabbits wouldn't make me feel so stupid so often

__________ Tue Nov 27, 2012 1:37 pm __________

I put the one eyed kit into another litter and, even though does cant count, they sure can smell an intruder! She was NOT impressed

Perhaps its because all of that batch of kits are out of the nest boxes so she could SEE the new one as well as smell it?

So that three are now in another cage with water and food and shall give them some oat-meal later and I might put in the half gallon waterer as that cage is on a different water system so it has different nipples.

Rabbits sure keep me hoppin'.
