I was wondering which kind of pellets you guys like best; you can't really trust the people at Petco (no offense to those who work there!). One lady told me all the goldfish in the tank were males; I came home one night and my goldfish laid eggs!

I've never bought rabbit food from Petco.

I use a lot though, and it's way more expensive than a feed store. It's cheaper to go to Walmart. Small world is just MannaPro in a different bag.

I was gonna say the same thing. Yeah, Wal-Mart...?

Small World in the green bag is made by MannaPro, one of the largest producers of animal feed, and my preferred brand of pellets (after Rowe).
It is a slighty lower quality, but if you only have pets or are not a heavy breeding rabbitry, it's fine. In a pinch, because I live in the city proper, if I can't make it to TSC, I will get SW from Walmart. I don't have too many choices. SW is $9/25 lbs bag, Petco, well, let's laugh at prices.

When I only had pets, I bought food from Pet Supplies Plus, pellets at $.33/lb. I only had two dwarf rabbits. I never bought hay. Tried hay cubes and they wouldn't eat them. Gave them dried leaves.

I *wish* I could get Rowe feed. :p

Nowhere near me to buy it from!

I just wanted to add that hay for rabbits should be "horse quality".

You can also get small bags of timothy hay at Walmart. However, expect to pay about the same for a small bag as a bale of grass hay. If you don't have a place to store hay them it's an option.

They do. That's been my source for pellets for over 3 years now and I'm feeding Flemish Giants and French Lops. Funny thing though, they keep getting bigger. :p

In all those bags I've only had one that was questionable (had a clump in it the size of your fist) and I took it back, raised a little
The-Devil-devil-fire-monster-smiley.gif~original
and they gave me 2 new ones.

Well. Then again, none of us should be surprised by that.

Hay delivery is the same for all 3 of my buns. But for whatever reason Coconut pulls hers and piles it before sitting down to eat. Soooo she waste a lot of hay. But not the others. Rabbits

What kinda hay are they supposed to eat?

Alfalfa hay....den wut's normal hay?
And any info on pellets?
There are a couple of different types of hay -- mainly legume hay and grass hay.

The legumes include alfalfa, clover, beans, peanuts, kudzu, and even mimosa trees. Legumes tend to be high in protein and make a protein-rich hay. You can raise rabbits on nothing but alfalfa and a salt wheel. Alfalfa is cheap in Canada and expensive in the southern USA.

Grass hays include Bermuda, Bahia, brome, Timothy, orchard, coastal (Bermuda), prairie, and fescue. These are frequently fed to horses, and when you see "horse hay" on RT, these are what is being talked about. Hay for rabbits must have always been kept under cover. Timothy is, for most of us, extremely expensive. Bunnies love it, but it's a pain in the wallet. They don't need Timothy; any of the others will do just fine.

I thought the same thing when Aslan came to us with a bag of Small World. Then I turned it over and looked at the ingredients, and saw Manna Pro on it. Yep, it's true. You can get good rabbit food at Walmart.

Whoops. I just got timothy hay from Petco...
Hey, nobody's stopping you. It's just expensive, that's all. (Maybe not in Mirkwood...) You probably don't need to find room to store a 75 lb bale of something else for one bunny, but you might be able to find some sort of hay in a reasonable amount for a reasonable price. Or you can shell out for Timothy.

We buy from Walmart whenever possible. They carry the same type of feed as the feed stores, but cheaper.

Calf manna is 1/2 the price for twice the feed (still expensive though).

Hay is so ridiculous expensive. $12 a bale. Even a 60lb bale doesn't last long. We only give it to them during nesting when I know a doe is due, or as a treat, or when a rabbit can't have pellets (weaning enteritis, had a scare, fed her only hay for a few days).

To give them hay like foods, I'm also drying fireweed, grass, and have been sprouting fresh plants for them. Give them a good pellet feed and keep an eye on their teeth, should have no issues.

I can't anymore either. 2 hrs plus. A guy 20 minutes from me used to sell it. Then the city found out he had rabbits and was stocking feed, and he had to sell everything.

-- Sun Jul 12, 2015 4:21 pm --

My Angoras do the same, and really they are the ones I buy it for!

I found a feed store about 20 minutes from where I live, so that was lucky.
:thinking:Hmm, where would 20 minutes from Mirkwood be? :hmm:
Returned the Petco hay and got another kind from the feed store that Caramel really likes, as well as a bag of pellets. Unsurprisingly, both of them cost less than the bag of hay from Petco. :?

I got 2-75lb square bales of "horse quality hay" of $2 a bale. Had to drive 30 miles to get it. :x I live in the sticks and am surrounded by corn, soy bean, and hay fields but still had the long drive. Trying to find Square bales is like trying to find the last unicorn in these parts.  Flat out refused to pay for at the stores. 50lb bale $17 or 3.5 $9 or 1.75lb of $5. That's more than a gallon of gas or milk. :x

I take it all back just looked at petco's prices. :doc:
