Now, now, OAF- no need for name calling- you know we all have different ways of raising our families, and she sounds like a firm believer in "attachment parenting", which may not work out for most bunnies (who seem to favor Dr. Ferber!), but may work well for her!

In any case, I am happy to hear the babes are well this morning. It's probably best to let her have the "practice" of raising them herself, and it sounds like she is trying. The kit can't get out of the nest without riding out on a nipple, right? So that means she'd nursed them at least once before you found him, and had likely just finished feeding the ones still in the nest.

I'm not one to cuss much either. You should see hubby's face when I do the sing-songy voice and the "I'm going to eat you, you worthless sack of....."

Well, it may eventually become a term of endearment! And I AM glad that she is at least trying. Two out of three ain't bad, right? Sassy, aka Not-So-Psycho Doe, is doing remarkably well with her 8 and if this one continues to improve, she may get to stay. She is a pretty little thing...

__________ Thu Dec 29, 2011 9:53 am __________

When the chickens stop laying during molt Hubs threatens them constantly! I try to discourage him doing so in their hearing... visions of "Chicken Run" come to mind. The chickens are organizing...

Several of mine always sit on the back of the nestbox. That's pretty normal behavior. Especially once the kits start coming out in order to avoid them. Wouldn't count that against a doe. She sounds like she isn't doing bad actually. Many don't pull fur right away and some don't feed for up to 48hrs then they raise their kits just fine. The problem with that is the kits will freeze if it's done in winter. A doe like that may not be a good candidate for breeding in cool weather but may raise litters perfectly fine from spring through fall.

She doesn't sit on the back of the nest box, she sits IN the nest box...facing out. Like a chicken sitting on eggs. Their nest is deep at the back so hopefully she won't squash them. She is doing a little better each day, it is just so different from the rest of my does who got it perfect the first time. Even her sister from the same litter. I know they are the exception rather than the rule, but I seem to have quite a few "exceptions" LOL!
