Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum and unfortunately the post is not for a fun filled reason. I recently have gotten back into raising rabbits after 15-ish years and have started with Holland Lops and Chins. I hoped that this would be a fun family activity but so far it has been one problem after another. I was given a nice tort buck who we hope to be awesome on the table and should have his first run in about 3 weeks. The problem I am having is he seems to have a runny nose but no other symptoms. His eyes are clear, his appetite is good, and he is full of energy. I have noticed that he will not eat timothy but has been eating his pellets. I can not put him on a table with a snotty nose so Please give me some suggestions to help get rid of this. I am hoping it is allergy related. :|

Welcome, New hear, and don't have much experience with runny noses. All I know is if its not clear, there is really a problem. But then again, if it's clear it could be an allergy of sort. Maybe the timothy is a bit dusty which could turn her off of it?

Well Baad Family,
It is not good. though it is possible that the runny nose
could be caused by an allergy to a number of things,
like a cologne, clothing detergent or even dust in the air.
There is also a strong possibility that it is a symptom
of Snuffles. I would isolate this rabbit from the rest,
feed and care for it last and don't touch your other rabbits
until you have washed and changed your clothes.
You can become a vector by carrying the germ on your clothing and person.
Be extremely cautious and watch for any more signs of illness in the rabbit.
Do not place your other rabbits at risk until you are certain that the problem
is NOT Pasteurella [Snuffles] There is NO treatment or CURE for Snuffles/Pasteurella.
Whenever you add any new rabbit into the herd it is advisable to isolate it from
the herd for at least two weeks, longer is even better.
This is just a suggestion, what you choose to do is up to you and only you.
I might be thinking of culling that rabbit.
Ottersatin. :eek:ldtimer:

Even if it was an allergy, I would still consider culling the rabbit, especially if you intend on breeding, it should not be used for that purpose. My policy with rabbits are the same and even harder, since they are harder to treat for illnesses. Rabbit with allergies are not common, so unless you can pinpoint it to something you are doing, it's probably the rabbit's weak immune system showing through.

Sorry you had to start with a problem, Baad Family, but we're glad to have you with us anyway. :welcome:

I agree with Ottersatin on this. Isolate it and see how it goes. Don't endanger your other rabbits for the sake of one. If the discharge is clear, it may be allergies. If it is white or yellow, I would cull the rabbit. I don't know if you eat rabbit, but the meat from the rabbit would be safe even if it is snuffles.
