I just attended the AVRC show this past weekend, showing my new trio of Jersey Woolies and my standard Rex. The senior JW doe I got from Sundew took BOB in the B show, and one of the Rex bucks I bred took BOSB in his class. He is a third generation rabbit in my Rex program.

Of course I was pleased to get the JW BOB, but it wasn't MY victory- it was Sundew's. I just own the rabbit. ;) The BOSB meant more to me because that rabbit is one that I bred myself... granted, his dam is only a 2nd generation rabbit and I bred her back to my original buck, so I am not too far from where I started with my original stock... but there is still an "intellectual investment" in him rather than just a monetary one.

If you are interested in becoming involved with a club there is a way to do it without joining. Most clubs allow you to attend some meetings without being an official member, and they always need help when they are hosting a show- so you could volunteer your time at a show if you can arrange transportation to get there. Who knows... maybe someone will sponsor your membership, or the club will waive your dues because they find you to be a valuable asset in other ways. If not, I'm sure you will have met some nice people along the way. :)

Congrats on the BOB and BOSB, MSD!! Both must have been rewarding, but to see something that you've put your time and effort into win... that's the feeling I want. I was raised to pick a goal, and work towards it; I was never handed things as a child, if I wanted something, I worked for it. I suppose that has stuck with me, that it's far more rewarding to do the work yourself. Something that has stuck in my mind was when my sister was involved in 4H. My mother leased a horse for her from my sister's friend's family. A big palomino gelding, huge, old, placid... but stubborn and not responsive. My sister worked on that horse every day for months before the show they were hosting, and through improving her own riding, she also improved the horse. In the show, she borrowed her friend's jumper, as Sunny was too old to safely jump, and took first. She had done flatwork on Sunny, gotten a third place, which was the best ribbon that gelding had ever won. She was by and far more proud of working that old horse enough to have him responsive enough to get her third, than she was of jumping to first on her friend's push button horse.

I think that in the new year, I'm going to look into the DRCBA, which has close shows, and pick a show I can go to just to see how things are, meet some people, and see if the show world is right for me. I never thought about volunteering, though! I'm also making valuable contacts at the moment with other LH breeders, especially though the purchase of my dust mop. Her breeder was willing to evaluate her via pictures, and she and I came up with the same issues. She's also offered to evaluate my other stock, if I can send her better pictures, and she also thinks that Dobby would be a good match for the dust mop.

But, truth be told, I think that this forum, and the members here, are my greatest asset. I've learned so much from everyone, both good things and bad things. And regardless if it is "realistic" or not, I would much rather know that my blood, sweat and tears are invested in what I'm breeding and eventually showing, than just my money.
