Congratulations! Lovely kits. Pinkie looks healthy. Isn't there always one that is an exception to the color rules? Will be interesting to see how that pink one develops.

Thanks Karen.. YEs there is .. I wonder what color it really is going to be. It was a surprise for sure. They were born last night outside. And it was minus 10. It is her first litter. She pulled lots of fur. Good mom so far.

Definitely sounds like a Good First Time Mom, making sure her kits are kept warm in such cold weather. Good mothering instincts. Amazing how some just take to it. Good temperament seems to help with that "mothering" instinct kicking in?

My guess is that somewhere waaaaaaaaaaay back in the lines of the buck and doe someone tossed some REW something or other in there to make the Chin more "typey". And that's how you get the magical REW chin.... Not a big deal, just cull it and let any people that you may sell Chin kits too (or the parents later down the road) know that they could throw white kits.

Yes, chins are hard to find, so there are people who cross their chins to REW. For some time, I did not have a chin buck, so the chin doe was bred to a REW. I got a REW on the second litter. If it has good type then you could keep it to breed, if you don't mind. If you don't like REW, then cull it. I don't care for REW, but I am hurting for chins, so a REW from two chins is better than nothing.

I am trying to build a herd without REW. It's a tricky thing to do, because it could be off the ped up to 20 generations I heard someone on a SF forum say, and still show up. I have a buck that has not produced it in repeated breedings to does that carry REW and to a REW doe.

I have a friend who raises Giant Chinchilla's. He gets REW every few litters and this summer he had the entire litter was REW's. Everytime you breed those two you'll have the chance of REW and if you breed the offspring back to the parents that chance is there.

It's good to at least have a bun to breed. But if it's REW that means it is homozygous "cc" and can't carry ANYTHING on the C locus but albino;
no chd, ch, C, only c. If bred to a chd that doesn't carry "c" you will get all chins but all the kits from that litter will carry "c"

Which is probably how that c got on that ped in the first place. It has some other uses, if it's good enough. Keep in mind though, that except for one, I've culled all of my REW or given them away.

This reminds me of my suprise rew litter. I bred my rew jersey wooly doe to my black otter buck showing no sign of rew on his pedigree but guess what i got, an entire litter of rew babies. Lol
