Here is my moment of weakness.....Gottfried's 2f or better known as Pumpkin Pie. Picked him up at the rabbit show today. Dont know much about Nethies but some people set up near me (not the breeder) said I got a great deal at $20 with pedigree. The only thing they didnt care for is his ears, they are a tad long for his age. But he has a nice broad round head and great hindquarters and good color.

Now I just need to find him a wife  I am guessing it should be an orange doe since that is the only color in his pedigree.

I just wanna eat him up! Nethies don't eat much, and they're just sooo precious! Congratulations! Maybe you should name his wife cinnamon?

Definitely spot on with the ears. Just a tad too long. But if you get a wife with shorter ears, definitely orange, those babies will be beautiful.

Definitely a good buy. Congratulations!

Karen

thanks! Cinnamon sounds like a good name. He is such a sweetie, he has been sitting with me at the computer liking my arm :lovers:

Very pretty!

I would suggest Whipped Cream for his wifey... Nothing goes better with Pumpkin Pie than whipped cream!!

I agree!

Maybe I need a whipped cream and a Cinnamon  He is really enjoying his time in the house, might just have to make him a house bunny

__________ Mon Sep 24, 2012 2:10 pm __________

Why do I have to fall in love with one of the hardest colors to breed!! Oranges, I am told should be bred to other oranges for the best color, also can be bred to chestnuts to help with ear size, but if bred to chestnuts there is the risk of producing smutty colored oranges. I do need a doe with smaller ears, so now I am hinking maybe I should get a chestnut doe and an orange doe... decisions decisions. Also why do netherlands have to be so expensive  I guess I got real lucky to get him for so cheap, almost all the other breeders I have been looking at want between $200-$250! Way out of my price range :(

I would contact his breeder and get a little wifey or two for him from there. I bet they will give you a good deal. :)

He is adorable- I love his color. :)

He is adorable! Where exactly are you in Ohio, Jessica? I'm in Ohio too and have Netherlands and Hollands. I agree...$200 or more is way too much! I have a chestnut doe with exceptional ears that I could breed if you wouldn't mind waiting a bit on a baby?

Summer babies, you gotta love 'em, long ears and all!

You didn't say how old he was. If he's less than 3 months, you need to keep him as cool as possible, otherwise those ears will continue to grow and you won't be able to show him. It's gonna be iffy now.

Definitely find him a girlfriend with teeny ears. I would go with chestnut or torte or chocolate. If you like the brokens, oranges make pretty crosses.

He's a cute bunny, and you certainly didn't lose anything on him. Good job!

Are you sure about this? It sounds plausible, but if it is true, I would think all of the Elop breeders would breed in summer, and all the dwarf breeders would try for winter litters.

I also would like to know the plausibility of rabbit ears growing longer in warm/hot weather.

Those oranges, when I first started out all I could find was orange or white when I wanted to work with black.
Cute bunny!

The ears grow faster, but I believe they will only grow as long as they are supposed to grow. Sometimes. I haven't seen any difference with my holland lops. The ears seem to have gotten bigger faster, but comparatively, they are the same length as the spring litter.

Why can't I just like the simple colors, like black, white, blue and brokens?

I don't know if there has been any professional study done, but it's a pretty well accepted fact around here, since it gets so hot. Any bunnies with short ears, like dwarfs, polish, woolies, etc seem to always have shorter ears when its colder. The breeder I will be getting my Elops from has promised to keep a heat lamp on the babies, to keep their ears growing, when it gets cool. Since they are in Oregon and its already in the 50's there and this is their prime growing time, I appreciate that promise.

It just makes sense, since bunnies lose heat thru their ears, for them to get a little longer when it is hot. Like I said, I'm not quoting any professional study, just going off of 20 years of bunny raising experience.

It does have a certain logic to it, which is why I asked. Anecdotal evidence is valuable too! :) Maybe I will measure ear sizes on my JW's and average them out according to the time of year they were born. :)
