We have 7 Holland Lop kits that are 4 days old. We have been keeping them in the house and taking them out to the garage where the doe is twice per day. We live in Michigan and it's only in the upper 30 degrees in our garage and we don't want the kits to get cold and die.
Our nest box has 1/4"x1/4" hardware cloth in the bottom. We stapled cardboard to the outside bottom to keep the fur from getting out. Inside the box is hay and a lot of the does fur.
This morning my wife took the kits out to be fed and said that they all urinated as she was feeding them and now most of the fur is wet and stuck to them.
They are back in the house, but we are wondering what we should do?
1. Leave them as is and hope the fur dries while they are inside today
2. Pull out all the wet fur and replace it with one of the following -
A. Saved fur from a different doe
B. Dryer lint
C. Pine shavings
D. More hay
My concern with using a different does fur is that it will smell different. Will that stop her from feeding them? Or if we add pine shavings will that cause a problem (nest box eye) when they open their eyes in a few days?
Thank you. We appreciate all the help people on this site offer!
