I found one of South's kits (18 days old) with an eye gooped shut. Used a warm washcloth to wipe away the dried goop and the eye opened right up. Still a litter red around the edges, but I expect that.

Should I do anything else? I know with babies you'd use breastmilk, and read another thread talking about using expressed doe's milk. I doubt South will sit still for that. Would another animal's milk work, since we happen to have a lactating dog? I'm guessing not, but figured I'd ask anyway.

Will black tea work for an eye bath? Do you dropper it in or just do compress?

I don't see why not. A neighbor of mine had a horse with an eye issue, and she also has milk goats. She treated the eye with it and it cleared up in no time. :)

You can also use chamomile tea as an eye rinse.

The most important thing is to keep the eye open, since bacteria thrive in moist, low light environments. I would check the eye twice a day and soak the crust off so he can open the eye.

__________ Wed Aug 21, 2013 1:17 pm __________

I guess my concern with the dog milk -> rabbit is the totally different bacterial set-up in the bodies. One is the thing the other eats...

Ordering some at Walgreens now. So just dab it on with a cloth or q-tip, or actually rinse with a dropper?

Got it! Thanks! =)

All breastmilk has anti-bacterial properties- they are not "species specific"...

Oh- I was editing the prior post when you posted; I gave you a link about black tea as an eyewash.
