I have seen so many different nest boxes and was wondering what everyone used. I had a friend tell me to get the plastic bin shoe boxes and use one of them for a nest box. Anyone else do this? It seems like it might be dangerous.

I have never seen plastic used as a nest box. I use a 1/2" plywood, and 1/4" wire on bottom. It is 2" longer and wider than the doe's I have.

I'm using the metal ones from Bass, and they're working well for me. I'd love to have wire drop-down boxes someday, but for now this works. The bottom has a removable wooden plank that can be replaced if it gets too soiled.

My rabbits would chew on the plastic and eat it. They also seem like they'd be rather lightweight. I'd be afraid of the doe tipping it on accident... or tossing it around.

I have used the plastic nest boxes with great success for Standard Rexes. I have only had one doe tip one over, and she would have rocked a wooden box till it tipped regardless. I put a stone in the box until the litter is born, I have also anchored boxes to the side of the cage.
Since I bring the litter inside, I just put the lid on it, stack the boxes and carry them in.

I have only had one doe chew on them, and as people use plastic litter boxes, the small amount of plastic doesn't seem to have done any damage. They will chew on wood just as readily.
I have also used a wire nest for a doe that was known for destroying nest boxes.

I use plastic, the small cat carriers, one half for a nest. No issues other than not having a lip in the front and being top open.

I have pine nestboxes. about 3/4 inch thick
They were too small for the does, but in a pinch I had to use them
They had a 4 inch lip that went over the top and before this last kindle I decided to take
that off and now mama actually goes in.
She used to put her front legs up on top.

I could only get the medium size but will be getting or making larger ones

I use wooden nest boxes that my father and husband made for me. They are quite thick and retain the heat well. As far as keeping them sanitary, after each litter I clean them very well, bleach, then leave them outside for a few days on very sunny day's.

I let my son draw all over them so they are kinda special to me.

Sky's the Limit I love your idea though, if we had to bring ours in I think I would give your method a try for sure.

I considered offering ones with wood burned designs on them.

Hmm I never thought of that. That's actually a pretty neat Idea. I love personalizing things.

I love my plastic totes, way easier to clean than wood, they keep the heat in fine and I've not had a doe knock one around with kits in it yet, push them a bit yes but not anything else. My does don't chew on them very much either unlike the wood ones.
