Mother and I attended the show in Columbia, SC yesterday. As expected, she was non-stop with the "oh, I want that" song. I was busy keeping her from buying every rabbit she saw while also locating and chatting with all the Silver Fox breeders that were in attendance.

There was a raffle (I guess that is standard feature of shows) with a number of rabbits up for raffle. I bought tickets.

I positioned myself (with permission) at the end of the table during the two judgings for Silver Foxes so I could watch and listen to the judge. The second judge seemed more amicable so afterward I asked him some questions. He was very nice and willing to answer my questions.

I also met a 4H teacher...quite by accident actually. I was talking to a young man who was holding his Silver Fox. She saw him grab the rabbit by the ears and her reaction was quick and instinctive. As a result, we had a teaching moment as she taught him, and I, how to pick up and flip a rabbit onto it's back. The young man (and his father) were a bit annoyed but I was very appreciative of the lesson.

I won a rabbit in the raffle--a Jersey Wooly buck with one "leg". I don't know that I want to breed Woolies...I live in such a hot humid area I'm not sure it would be a good breed choice for my area. But, this little buck is sweet, likes to be held, and is only one year old. He is in need of some grooming and I had to trim his very long nails. (And, yes, quarantine strictly enforced for one month.)

No one had SOP books...several people said that "So-And-So always has them but she didn't come today." Seems no one else bothered to carry some for sale because So-And-So usually does. :( So, I guess I'll be ordering a copy from ARBA.

Nancey (the vender) didn't show because her mother just came to live with her from hospice, so she needed to stay home.

I was there too. Had a good time. there were 20 cremes, I was told larger entry then the Convention
won 4 legs! BOB both shows with different rabbits, so now both got their 3rd legs and JR doe both shows with 8 entered in that class
I REGed two rabbits, bought 6 36 long 30 deep and 18 tall double galvanized cages, 2 dozen springs, 10 e-z crock feeders, 12 hutch card holders, 12 resting mats and a pair of Rhinelanders
traded a SR doe for a JR buck with new bloodline!!! :pinkbunny: :pinkbunny: :pinkbunny:

OHOHOH and I met Lastfling! his rabbit are beautiful! poor guy set up next to us and I talked his ears off. I had to talk to walk otherwise I would have fallen asleep. it is what happens when you get up at 3 am on show day.

Sounds like you had a good time! You'll enjoy the little Jersey, I don't raise them myself and probably won't, but they're darling little critters and wonderful cuddle buddies.

Glad you both had a good time. :)
I love how you had a teaching moment..its funny cuz I jus posted about how every show ya learn something new..even though you might not lik what you learn or how you learn it.
Congrats on your new addition of a jersey wooly :) they really are a great breed. Ive had them for 10 years and if I didnt like them I wouldnt have around 100 of them lol they really are easy to care for if you keep up on their cages and groom when needed (but dont groom the heck out of it or itll have no density).
But they arnt for everyone so its really up to how you feel about them.

Yes, that is what someone said...something about her mother. Since I'm new to rabbit shows I wasn't aware that folks try not to duplicate stock that other vendors generally carry. I didn't know until after the raffle that the cage guy was out the back door -- didn't see a sign for him or anything. I suddenly found myself in need of a carry cage and that is when someone say "oh, the cage guy is out back". Was he the one you got the feeders and stuff from? I saw he had resting mats....it was just so crazy at that point that I didn't get to explore what all he had for sale.

__________ Mon May 21, 2012 10:27 am __________

He is such a sweetie. He gets mad when we put him back in his cage--thumps his foot! Sooo cute.

The grooming part is what we are trying to figure out. How does one "harvest" the wool?

We were looking online at all the different colors Woolies come in...oh, dear...I think we want one of each color... :p

Yes, He got there late. I was afraid he wasn't coming. I had ordered them a week before. he came only to bring the per ordered stuff and a few little things. Most years they have a pretty good seat up, in fact they are the main reason I go to the show,to get rabbit stuff =)

I have learned NOT to look at the rabbits on the Raffle table. I always want them and a number of times have won them. and that is just what I need more rabbits LOLs.

Who was the 2nd Judge?

Jersey woolies have great temperment:) And they actually stop their feet out of fear or to make it known something is their teritory..so it could be both.
Now jersey woolies are not that known for using their wool to spin it. I dont spin so I dont know how. The woolies have a lot more texture then angoras and dont have as much wool so they just are not used for spinning as much. You can do it with a wooly but its going to take more then one wooly lol
And yes that is the good thing about woolies is they have so many colors. :) I raise all the color groups..and its cool to see what ya get in the litters. If you want to show them you have to be careful about what colors you breed together though because you will get unshowables.

I'm afraid I did not note his name. He looks like Santa Claus. :D

__________ Mon May 21, 2012 12:03 pm __________

Oh. :( Well, that's okay, I don't spin nearly as much as I wish I did...though I had hoped for an excuse to do more of it. "Well, you see, I HAVE to spin this or we will be drowning in wool."

All the color groups!?! Oh, your rabbitry must look like a Crayola Crayon box!

haha seeky seeky :cool: well just do a lil and theres your excuse (;
And yes pretty much a rainbow

Tailwagging it was a pleasure meeting you and your husband and you did have some beautiful Creme's. Congratulations once again on the wins and maybe you'd consider moving those Rhinelanders up North a little  . Did you get pedigrees with them? I still have my ears by the way. Sounds like you second judge was the same as mine, unfortunately, I'm bad at names and don't remember either. I guess we'll have to wait for the show report.

They are going to send me the peds. sure if you want some I'll let you know when I have some available. I LOVE working with other breeders, it means I don't have to work the lines all by myself.

Sounds like you guys had so much fun! I got the showing itch :) I've been working my regular job and doing odd jobs for people just to have spending money ( you can't go to a show without spending money). Thinking of finding a pair of Elops :D Want a fun larger breed on the side!

yep, you gotta have spending money!

Though...I try to make sure Mother doesn't have any money (discretionary or not) on her as she goes around the show room! Lord help us if she actually had the money to buy all the rabbits she wants!
